Crestline, CA – Mick Hill’s bid of $145,000 for the 2.15-acre Mary Tone Education Center in Crestline had been accepted by the Rim of the World Unified School District.

Superintendent Giovanni Annous presented Hill’s bid during a meeting of the Board of Education held December 10 at the Rim High School Library. The superintendent’s staff report recommended that Director of Business Services Jenny Haberlin be authorized to execute the final Purchase Agreement with Hill.
The board concurred.
THE SALE PROCESS
In June of 2015, the district’s trustees passed a resolution calling for the sale of the 2.15 acres land parcel after declaring it was surplus property.
Bidding took place in the district’s conference office in Blue Jay, with the minimum bid beginning at $60,000. Hill — who operates Mick Hill Enterprises based in Cedarpines Park — had submitted a written bid of $70,000 for the former elementary school site in Crestline’s Top Town, according to public documents.

A written bid of $80,000 by Dennis Levitt — who owns Mountain Storage in Valley of Enchantment — was determined to be non-conforming.
Oral bids were then accepted and Hill outbid Levitt and was determined to be the high bidder.
Hill has not made a final decision on the future of the property but told The Mountain NEWS he would entertain input from the community but would look into the site being used as a charter school.
MARY TONE CENTER
Erected in 1929 and renamed in 1974 for Mary Tone, who taught there for 27 years, the Education Center went through various incarnations over the next four decades before being shuttered in 2012 following a dispute with the county over building code regulations.
Two years ago,, thieves stripped the building of most of its copper pipes and electrical wiring.
Since that time the Mary Tone Education Center has been used as surplus storage facility by the school district.
