Awards season is upon us! and the ultimate award ceremony – The Oscars – is just around the corner.

Gran Ciudad de Mexico – James Bond Spectre
Mexico City, Mexico
The opening scene of the latest James Bond outing Spectre takes place in Mexico City during the colourful Day of the Dead festival. Daniel Craig’s 007, kitted out in a skeleton-painted suit, follows smouldering Estrella (Stephanie Sigman) into an ornate elevator and chamber – this is the Gran Ciudad de Mexico.
Boasting a stunning stained-glass ceiling in the lobby and gilded open elevators, this hotel is renowned for its Art Nouveau décor and old world elegance. Its 60 classically-styled rooms and luxury suites are adorned with antique furnishings while incorporating modern comforts, which include plush bedding, Wi-Fi, and rich marble en suite bathrooms.

The Plaza – The Great Gatsby
New York City, USA
The iconic Plaza Hotel has featured in a host of films over the years, including American Hustle and Sleepless in Seattle. Macaulay Culkin famously tricked staff into giving him a room using his father’s credit card in 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Although all filming of Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby took place in Australia, The Plaza was recreated to host one of the most climactic scenes of the film.
In one of the lavish hotel suites, Tom confronts Daisy about her extramarital relationship, resulting in the termination of the party and Gatsby’s consequent death. F. Scott Fitzgerald no doubt included The Plaza in his novel as a regular patron of the hotel with his wife Zelda. The Plaza even created the Fitzgerald Suite in honour of The Great Gatsby.

Four Seasons – The Wolf of Wallstreet

Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street was nominated for an impressive five Oscars in 2014 including Best Picture, but came away empty-handed after losing out to 12 Years a Slave. Nevertheless, the true story of Jordan Belford’s rise as a wealthy stockbroker is a compelling one.
Jordan proposes to his future wife Naomi in the Pool Room of the Four Seasons Restaurant, which is located just five blocks from its namesake, the Four Seasons New York. This luxurious five-star hotel is steeped in tradition and famed for its views over Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

Hilton Berlin – Bridge of Spies
Berlin, Germany
Steven Spielberg’s new Cold War drama Bridge of Spies is nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars. The film stars Tom Hanks as a lawyer who is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for a captured American spy plane pilot.
Hilton Berlin played a significant role in the spy exchange, and Spielberg used the hotel in the film, complete with Cold War-era décor. Located centrally on Berlin’s historic Gendarmenmarkt Square, Hilton Berlin features stunning views of the Berlin Cathedral as well as elegant rooms decorated in warm colours and a modern fitness centre.

The Langham Pasadena – Saving Mr. Banks
Los Angeles, USA
Saving Mr. Banks is a 1960s-set period drama featuring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as author P. L. Travers who meet in Hollywood to negotiate filming rights for Mary Poppins.
Although Travers stays at the Beverly Hills Hotel in the film, the filming actually took place at The Langham Huntington Pasadena. Das Central – James Bond Spectre
Sölden, Austria
Appearing for the second time on this list, Spectre also saw Bond take to the Austrian Alps and the ski resort of Sölden for some snow-based action scenes. Das Central, the resort’s only five-star hotel, doubled as the Hoffler Klinik where Dr. Madeline Swann is abducted by Mr. Hinx, a SPECTRE assassin.

The Waldorf-Astoria – The Intern
New York City, USA
A classic example of Art Deco decadence, the Waldorf-Astoria oozes luxury with its grandiose lobby and stylish rooms. Its glittering association with Hollywood dates back to 1945 when the hotel was chosen as the setting for Weekend at the Waldorf. A host of films have been shot there since then, including The Royal Tenenbaums, Maid in Manhattan and Scent of a Woman.

W Washington D.C. – X-Men: Days of Future Past

The W Washington D.C. dates back to 1918, making it the oldest continually-operating hotel in Washington D.C. Over the years the W has demonstrated its pop culture credentials, boasting former guests such as Elvis and Marilyn Monroe and made appearances in The Godfather Part II, The Firm, as well as the most recent X-Men film, X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The Fairmont Copley Plaza – American Hustle

Like The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle came away from the 2014 Oscars empty-handed despite being nominated for an impressive ten Academy Awards. The film follows con artist Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his partner-in-crime Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) as the two are led into the world of the mafia by insufferable FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).
The Fairmont Copley Plaza plays a part when Irving and Sydney rejoice over their successes in the glamorous hotel lobby, complete with chandeliers, marble floors and gilded wall paneling. The hotel was recently renovated to celebrate its centennial anniversary, now featuring high-end furnishing and custom sketches of Boston in each of the 400 guest rooms.

Columns Hotel – 12 Years a Slave
New Orleans, USA
Winner of Best Picture at the 2014 Oscars, as well as taking home awards for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Lupita Nyong’o for her portrayal of Patsey), and Best Adapted Screenplay, 12 Years a Slave tells the story of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who is kidnapped and sold into slavery. In the film, Solomon is kidnapped in Washington D.C., but the scene was actually shot in the heart of New Orleans, at the historic Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue.
The Italiante property dates back to 1883 and holds a place in the National Register of Historic Places. Each of the 20 rooms is uniquely decorated with Victorian furnishings, four-poster beds, fireplaces and claw foot bathtubs. Guests will love the southern hospitality at the traditional Victorian Lounge, serving New Orleans-style Creole and Cajun food.
