About 155,000 Romanian spent the New Year’s Eve in the country’s resorts, up by 7 percent compared to last year. Almost 10,000 Romanians travelled abroad to welcome the New Year, through travel agencies. Romanians spent over EUR 40 M in the country and abroad.

About 155,000 Romanians spent the New Year’s Eve in the country’s resorts, up by 7 pc against last year. They spent about RON 155 M, meaning 8% more than the previous year. 10,000 nationals chose to spend the New Year’s Eve abroad, up by 22%, says a press release by the Tourism Employers Federation. They spent over EUR 6 M for touristic services abroad, up by 23% against last year.

The traditional travel destinations in Romania were overcrowded as usually, with the number of tourists up by 7% at national level.

Over 29,000 Romanians spent their winter vacation in spa resorts, up by 3.5% compared to last year. Rises were also reported in the Danube Delta, but not on the seaside.

The largest number of tourists registered in the countryside. 55,000 Romanians chose to spend the New Year’s Eve in rural pensions, up by 5% against last year.

38,000 people went in the mountain resorts to spend their New Year’s Eve holiday, up by 5%, while over 35,000 people spent the last night of 2016 in hotels in big cities, up by 16% against the previous year.

Prices during winter holidays were also up by 6% compared to last year. Romanians have spent over RON 154 M to buy the New Year’s Eve travel packages in the country, up by 8% against last year.

The most sought after areas in Romania were Valea Prahovei, Poiana Brasov, Ranca, Straja, Calimanesti, Felix and the traditional rural regions such as Bran-Moeciu, Maramures and Bucovina.

Romanians who went abroad to spend their winter vacation opted among traditional ski resorts, city break packages in European cities and faraway exotic destinations.

Almost 10,000 Romanian tourists went to travel agencies to choose a vacation abroad. There were 22% more Romanian tourists who spent their winter vacation in other countries, spending 23% more than last year. Most of them bought travel packages for the ski resorts in Austria, France, Italy, Slovenia and Bulgaria.

The interest was low for city break destinations in Europe and there were no requests for the Middle East region. However, the travel appetite was higher for faraway destinations for New Year’s Eve such as Bahamas, Jamaica, Australia, South Africa, Vietnam or Dubai. A high demand was reported for the Dominican Republic, Maldives, Singapore, Mauritius or Thailand.

The trend of tourists buying vacations on their own was also high this year-end, with Romanians making online reservations particularly for the air-travel tickets and accommodation, and giving up meal and recreation bookings.
