Given its opening to the Black Sea, Romania can be a transport nodal point in South-Eastern Europe, Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said to Radio Romania broadcaster, after attending the 11th ASEM Summit carried out in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia these days.

“I insisted on the fact that Romania, in South-Eastern Europe, can be a transport nodal point, given its opening to the Black Sea, as it can reactivate certain connections with Central Asia and then with the entire Asian continent. Thanks to the Danube, we can ensure the transport of freight reaching the Port of Constanta through the Black Sea towards the entire Europe. (…)” Ciolos stated.

According to Executive head, Romanian officials have already initiated bilateral discussions with Black Sea, Caspian Sea riparian countries and with countries of Central Asia in this respect.

Romanian PM noted that connectivity also means internet and tourism.

“Connectivity means much more than transport infrastructure, it also means internet, it means facilitating the contacts between citizens, peoples, it means the development of tourism and (…) such informal meetings can be very useful to think, to put together programmes going beyond one continent or another,” Ciolos also said.

ASEM Summit marked this year 20 years since the launch of the political dialogue between Europe and Asia, by organising a high-level meeting.

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an informal process of dialogue and cooperation bringing together the 28 European Union member states, 2 other European countries, and the European Union with 21 Asian countries and the ASEAN Secretariat. The ASEM dialogue addresses political, economic, as well as social, cultural, and educational issues, with the objective of strengthening the relationship between the two regions in a spirit of mutual respect and equal partnership.
