JEN SCRIBER, INSURANCE AGENT TO RESCUES

Jen is an insurance agent who helps animal rescues get coverage they cannot function without.  She has helped RMCR get coverage to ensure we can hold all of our Showcase events, plus her coverage will allow us to have our Reunion on August 7th!  Here is her story.

Hi, I’m Jen! I am an animal lover, and not just of dogs but of all animals – – I had cats when I was growing up. When I met my husband, his first gift to me was a pug puppy.  He was my very first dog and I fell in love with him instantly.  After a year we drove to West Virginia to an American Bulldog Rescue and adopted our first rescue dog.  Our daughter was born 2 years later and that American Bulldog became her best friend; they were inseparable.

I have worked in insurance since 2000.  I started with home and auto insurance, doing that for about 10 years.  Then, when I was looking for another opportunity, I found out Kennel Pak needed an agent.  They are an insurance program developed to protect commercial kennels, groomers, and veterinarians from the cost of public and professional liability. While I knew nothing about this side of insurance, I knew I wanted to learn because I thought how awesome it would be to help rescue groups.  After all, we had a rescue pup ourselves and knowing there are so many still waiting for their forever homes, I wanted to help.

In the 6 years that I have worked at Kennel Pak doing rescue insurance, I’ve learned a lot about myself.  I always tell my clients I am on their side, and I do my best to prove it every day.  I sit and listen to the stories, and I sometimes cry with my clients.  I do everything I can to make sure animal rescue and care groups are fully covered.

This past December I took a vacation in New Orleans, Louisiana in which I spent one of my days volunteering at the Villa Lobos Rescue Center, which is the Pitbulls & Parolees rescue.  Spending the day there helped me really understand what rescue groups go through on a daily basis, and just seeing all those pups broke my heart.  If I could have taken them all home I would have in a heartbeat!

I try to spread the word about rescues to others I know.  When I find someone who is looking for a dog or cat, I ask what kind they want and then I tell them about the so-and-so rescue in their area. Since starting my job as an insurance agent to animal care groups, we lost our American Bulldog, Maddy, in 2013 at the age of 12 and our Pug, Ozzy, in 2014 at the age of 13 ½. We adopted a Shar Pei named Miss Wrinkles in 2014 from a local rescue.  The house was just too empty without our fur balls. Then, nine months later we adopted another Shar Pei, Eli, from the same rescue.

We always say that if we had more room we’d have more dogs. So while this is my job, it is also part of me and a piece of my heart goes out to each and every rescue group I work with.  I love helping rescues keep their insurance because in the long run it helps animals find loving homes.
