Missouri's football team boasts quite a few different uniform combinations, but the team's head coach isn't about flashy apparel surprises on gamedays at Memorial Stadium.
When Gary Pinkel ran onto the field on Saturday and claimed his spot on the East sidelines, he was wearing his now famous black Nike visor with a gold embroidered "Mizzou" across the front. It's simple and functional and has become as predictable as the smells of tailgating and the echoes of the fight song.
As a new tradition for Pinkel and part of his effort to help out local charities, after each 2015 home game (including Missouri's neutral-site game against BYU at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City), Pinkel is auctioning off his gameday visor. The proceeds from each auction, as well as $1,000 from Coach Pinkel, will benefit one of seven local charities.
In addition to the visor, the winner of the auction will share a fan experience with the charity the Wednesday after the auction closes. Included in the fan experience is a VIP tour of the Mizzou Athletic Training Complex, a viewing of Mizzou football practice, a meet-and-greet autograph session with Coach Pinkel and various players, and dinner with the team.
Here are Missouri's remaining home games and the corresponding charity to be supported by the auction:
October 3: South Carolina
Rainbow House provides safe housing and ongoing support for abused and neglected children as well as families in crisis. Services include a Children's Emergency Shelter, a Child Advocacy Center and a Homeless Youth Program.
October 10: Florida
The University of Missouri Children's Hospital cares for the unique healthcare needs of children, including more than 30 pediatric specialties, such as cancer and blood disorders, diabetes, ear, nose and throat program and orthopaedics. It's Missouri's largest and most comprehensive facility dedicated to children.
November 5: Mississippi State
True North supports and empowers victims of domestic and sexual violence. In addition to providing shelter for victims, True North creates a safe environment for these individuals to begin the healing process through counseling and case management services, support groups and educational programs.
November 14: BYU
The St. Baldrick's Foundation funds promising and lifesaving childhood cancer research across the nation. This volunteer-driven organization not only seeks to find cures for the one-in-five children who die from cancer but also strives to give young survivors long and healthy lives.
November 21: Tennessee
Coyote Hill Children's Home ensures abused and neglected children have safe, healthy and professional foster housing. With five homes, full-time home parents, licensed counseling as well as recreational and educational opportunities spread out across 200 acres, Coyote Hill has helped hundreds of children grow, learn and love in the past 24 years.
