Massage Therapy

Students in the Massage Therapy program graduate with a Diploma which grants them the eligibility to take the state licensing exam and become a fully-licensed massage therapist. Massage Therapy students are expected to complete an externship at the end of the program in a spa, hospital, health clinic, private practice, or with the Rockford IceHogs.

Program Description

This program provides instruction in massage modalities and techniques, anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, and prepares graduates to enter the field of massage therapy. This program focuses on therapeutic massage techniques used in a clinical setting. Additionally, students will complete a 180-hour externship in their last term of study.

After graduation, students will be prepared and eligible to take the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB).

Program Objectives

To provide a professional and participatory learning environment that delivers theoretical training and practical application of massage therapy skills.

To enable students through training to effectively perform a therapeutic, healing massage and become caring, contributing massage therapists.

To develop a knowledge and understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology in order to understand the principles and benefits of massage.

To effectively discuss massage issues with clients and to communicate client health issues with other health care professionals.

To provide students with an understanding of clinical pathology and recognition of conditions, indications, and contraindictations for massage application in order to provide safe and beneficial service to clients.

The ability to apply ethical business practices and professional standards in a massage environment.
