Free agent center DeAndre Jordan has decided to sign with the Dallas Mavericks on a four-year, $80-million deal, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the signing can’t be formalized until the free agency moratorium lifts on July 9.

The move is a huge boon for the Mavs and a huge blow for the incumbent Los Angeles Clippers.

2015 NBA free agency: Complete list of free agents

For the past seven seasons, Jordan evolved as a dominant defensive presence whose limited-but-effective offensive game (dunks, dunks, and more dunks) became a key part of the Clippers’ core. He was the first on the scene, so to speak, getting drafted in the second round (35th overall) out of Texas AM when coach Mike Dunleavy was coaching the team. And what a sad scene that season was.

From the 19-63 record in that 2008-09 campaign to the four consecutive playoff berths leading to his departure, he became a major piece of their championship-contending puzzle with point guard Chris Paul and forward Blake Griffin also leading the way.

The Clippers, who are extremely limited when it comes to ways in which to replace a talent of Jordan’s caliber, fell to the Houston Rockets in the second round of last year’s playoffs after beating the then-defending champion San Antonio Spurs in the first round. Doc Rivers, the Clippers president of basketball operations and coach who came to Los Angeles two summers ago looking to take this team to the next level, now has quite the challenge on his hand.

Dallas lands their second major free agent so far. On Thursday, the Mavericks agreed to a deal with Wesley Matthews, formerly of the Portland Trail Blazers. Matthews’ pay couldn’t be finalized until it was known whether or not Jordan would sign with the Mavericks, but a person with knowledge of his situation said it will now be a four-year, $57 million deal.

As USA TODAY Sports reported on June 23, Matthews – whose 2014-15 season was ended so abruptly when he tore his Achilles tendon in a game against the Dallas Mavericks on March 5 – entered free agency hoping for a deal that paid him approximately $15 million annually. The desire was largely ridiculed, with executives the league over shaking their heads at the notion that a player who is still recovering from such a serious injury could command that kind of money.

Yahoo Sports’ Marc Spears first reported that Jordan would sign with the Mavericks.
