The flowers may be blooming at home, but May is a good time to snare a bargain cruise fare – a variety of one-week cruises priced from under $500. Find early season savings on popular summertime destinations including Alaska, Bermuda, New England/Canada and the Mediterranean, as well as on select Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries (before the summer crowd arrives).

Cruise on the Grand Princess, from Whittier, Alaska to Vancouver, embarking May 16, from $399 per person for an inside, $429 for an oceanview stateroom. You’ll visit Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier and the popular ports of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. Cruise on the Star Princess on a similar route in May from $429; on the Coral Princess from $449.

Norwegian Sun in Alaska: Experience Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Freestyle Cruising” as you sail from Vancouver to Seward, including admiring Hubbard Glacier and the scenic wonders of Glacier Bay and visiting Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Fares for the May 25 sailing are from $449.

Holland America Line in Canada/New England: Set sail for a week on the Maasdam, between Montreal and Boston, or the Veendam, between Quebec City and Boston, fares in May from $499. The Maasdam’s itinerary, embarking May 16 and May 23, includes cruising the scenic St. Lawrence River, with port calls in Quebec City, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (home of the fictional “Anne of Green Gables”), Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Halifax and Bar Harbor, Maine. The similar Veendam route includes an overnight in Quebec City.

Celebrity Summit to Bermuda: Dip your toes in pink sands and turquoise water on the beautiful island of Bermuda. The Celebrity Summit embarks Bayonne, N.J. on May 3, and spends three days (two nights) docked in King’s Wharf, with easy access to beaches and other attractions. Fares from $429.

Southern Caribbean on Carnival Liberty: Cruise from San Juan on a round-trip itinerary that gets you to St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Maarten. Fares for a one-week cruise embarking May 10, from $419.

Costa Cruises in Europe: If you can find a last minute airfare, Costa Cruises has May sailings in the Mediterranean priced from $399 per week including on the brand new Costa Diadema, embarking Savona, Italy on May 2. The itinerary includes Marseilles, France: Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Naples and La Spezia (for Florence and Pisa).

Carnival Magic from Galveston: Set sail for the western Caribbean, with port calls in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, where you can swim with stingrays, and Cozumel. Fares for the May 3 sailing are from $499.

Wine country on the Golden Princess: The May 2 cruise on Golden Princess, as the ship repositions from Los Angeles to Vancouver, is a steal. Fares for the seven-day sailing are from $349 for an inside, $404 for an outside (oceanview) stateroom. The Pacific Coastal itinerary is especially appealing to wine lovers with port calls in Santa Barbara, San Francisco (for Sonoma and Napa) and Astoria, Oregon. There’s also a visit to delightful Victoria, B.C.

Carnival Splendor from New York to the Caribbean: Set sail on the Carnival Splendor on a rare, eight-day sailing from New York to San Juan, embarking May 24, fares from $479. Port calls include St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Antigua and St. Maarten (the return cruise, embarking June 1, is priced from $449).
