Nintendo has announced today via a press release that Super Nintendo World, a new area at Universal Studios Japan, is planned to open in 2020 just in time for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The news follows an announcement video that was released last month highlighting the vision Nintendo and Universal had for the themed area.

Super Nintendo World will be constructed using the current parking area of the theme park and an area designated for future expansion. It’s estimated the cost of development will be greater than 50 billion Yen (approximately AUD$580.6million).

Nintendo released some concept art of the planned expansion, which predominantly features a Mario themed setting. It has been stated the area will feature multilevel environments, state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, shops and restaurants. Other Nintendo characters and franchises will also be featured.

The Universal Studios theme parks in Hollywood and Orlando have been reconfirmed to be receiving Nintendo themed areas at an, as yet, unannounced date.
