Stop Procrastination in Its Tracks Fast
by Rochelle Griffin
We all have things that we don’t want to do, things that we procrastinate on. What is that one thing in your life that you’ve been putting off? Me? Well, often it varies for me, and next week it’s my taxes (yep I’ve procrastinated until almost the deadline.) The thought of closing myself in my office for several hours as I gather all of the information that our accountant needs is equivalent to a root canal for me. This would explain why it’s almost April and I haven’t done it yet. Oops.
Unfortunately there are consequences to procrastination. The consequences vary depending on the situation but nonetheless; they are there and very real.
When you procrastinate with your daily workout, there is a good chance that it won’t happen that day.
When you procrastinate with implementing good nutrition, there is a good chance that you won’t fit into your shorts come warmer weather.
When you procrastinate on your taxes, there is a good chance that your accountant won’t be very happy with you (note to self.)
How can you stop procrastination when it is directly affecting your health and fitness?
Make sure that your goals are doable. Don’t set yourself up for failure. If you know that you have a crazy day ahead, wake up an hour early to workout or choose a shorter workout. If you are new to exercise, choose a fitness program that is an appropriate level for you.
Start small. When you are trying to change your eating patterns, don’t attempt to do everything at once. I would never advise anyone to throw out everything in the pantry and start from scratch. It’s a sure-fire way to elicit a family rebellion. Think in baby-steps.
It’s never too late. If you mess up and make an unwise choice for lunch, it isn’t license to throw in the towel and binge for the rest of the day. Start fresh immediately. Don’t say you’ll “start tomorrow” instead.
LIKE what you are doing. Here’s a million dollar tip…if you don’t like the workout program you are doing, STOP! Be truthful with yourself. If you have to talk yourself into going to the gym or pushing the play button on your DVD player, chances are that your current program isn’t a good fit. When you like…or even love (gasp…yes you can LOVE your workouts. Promise.), there is less of a chance of putting it off.
Just do it! There comes a point that you need to stop researching, stop preparing, stop waiting for the perfect time, stop the excuses, and Just Do It. Make today that day.
Is it easy to stop procrastinating? Yes and no. The actual steps to take are easy. Seriously, re-read my tips, and you’ll see how simple they are. The issue is that procrastination comes more from our mental outlook on the situation. Unfortunately there isn’t an easy answer, other than to say, mind over matter and do what you need to do. Over time, you’ll find that you no longer have to push yourself. Instead, new habits will have been formed and the thoughts of procrastination will be long gone.
Ok, that “thing” you’ve been putting off. Time to go do it!
