Riding the wave of boundary-pushing design and contemporary living comes boutique coastal property and home-tel, The House in Hastings. Bold colours, brave interiors, stunning sea views from every floor and a beautiful home-from-home is exactly what renowned interior designer and co-owner Shaun Clarkson (Cliff Barns / Carrington House) had in mind with his unapologetically luxe, five-story Regency holiday home.
From family holidays, chic seaside escapes and special celebrations to working brainstorm breaks, The House in Hastings provides the perfect backdrop for up to 10 guests. The house combines comfort with glamour and soothing sea views from every room – switch off, hunker down and feel the stresses of urban life simply melt away. As one of the sunniest coasts in the UK and fast becoming Brighton’s cooler cousin, there’s plenty to take you to town too. From the sleek, black-tiled Jerwood Gallery of modern art to the thriving boutiques, independent shops, galleries and art studios that line the streets, Hastings offers an intoxicating blend of art, culture and avant-garde design mixed with caves, castles and traditional British seaside attractions.
The town’s most prominent home, The House in Hastings is perched on Croft Road on the top of West Hill, but just a mere five-minute walk away from the beach. Offering all the amenities of a boutique hotel with the welcoming atmosphere of a private home of distinction, every detail is taken care of courtesy of the house’s Concierge Service, from beach picnics to banquets, helicopters to horse riding, restaurant reservations to rambling trails. Private chefs and full catering can also be provided for a totally stress-free stay. Add to this, Ren toiletries in all the bathrooms, 400 thread count sheets, walk-in drench showers and roll-top baths as well as internet access, Smart TV, integrated music system and AV equipment and The House in Hastings delivers on style and substance.
A two-year restoration project of this Grade II listed building offers five statement bedrooms sleeping 10, four bathrooms and two further cloakrooms. Triple bay windows looking over the old town to the ever-changing seascape meet working fireplaces and dramatic entertaining spaces including a cinema room and beautiful al fresco dining terrace.
Curated to reflect the house’s coastal location, the property is elegantly finished in a symphony of textured blues and greens reflecting the landscape from Myland’s ‘Colours of London’ range. Shaun’s edit is evident throughout the property – discover an eclectic mix of specially commissioned furniture, vintage chandeliers and hand-picked antiques, all working fearlessly with vibrant custom-made carpets, modern artwork and vintage accessories.
Not for wallflowers, The House in Hastings is made for entertaining with its dining room featuring a magnificent 1970’s French brass and glass chandelier and circular Indian red dining table for 10. For nights in, custom-made velvet sofas, a working fireplace plus a Screening Room complete with an HD TV projector, drop-down screen and surround sound provides a five-star cinematic experience.
Foodies will love the state-of-the art kitchen which centres around a beautiful, 18th-century oak refectory table and is fully equipped with all the utensils and gadgets that any budding chef could wish for. The Smeg range cooker with twin oven, grill, pizza stone, six gas burners and griddle is at hand to make Sunday roasts a joy. Cupboards are stocked with Classic Volcanic Le Creuset®, vintage crockery from Poole Pottery and Wedgwood in addition to a full House in Hastings monogrammed dinner service. Leading off from the main kitchen is The Scullery with a prep area, butler sink and floor-to-ceiling larder storage area.
Sundowner cocktails and barbecues are ideal in the Fernery Garden, surrounded by tree ferns and a living wall of ivy, whilst the west-facing terrace, is the perfect spot for morning coffee.
Nothing here is understated. The magnificent master Admiral Suite takes up the entire second floor with a superior king custom-made sleigh bed, wrapped up in 400 thread count Egyptian cotton linen, from which you can watch the sun rise over the horizon. Plush chairs, set in the huge bay window, offer arguably the best views out over the English Channel whilst statement design features include a stunning French 1940’s chandelier, bespoke rug and working fireplace. Boys who like their toys will welcome the iconic classic iQuad HiFi and Quad Speakers and Sansui Turntable – don’t forget those vintage vinyls or connect via your iphone! The large en suite, with elegant chaise longue, is made for luxuriously long soaks in the roll-top bath. Alternatively, feel invigorated after using the walk-in drench shower with a view over the living wall.
The third floor is home to The Captain’s Room – a west-facing en suite twin or double room. Specifically designed with relaxation in mind, guests can watch the fishing boats come in while sipping champagne in the large roll-top bath set in the bedroom’s bay window. The opposite Cliff View Room, illuminated by 20th century chandelier lighting, provides a fairy tale view of a unique living wall trailing with fern and ivy. Adjacent to these rooms is a stunning mirror ball bathroom that imparts a magical glow courtesy of its gold mirrored tiles.
On the fourth floor, two nautical inspired rooms feature reclaimed ship lights and fittings and provide breath taking views over the town’s rooftops and beyond. The panelled Cabin Room comes with a super king-sized bed whilst The Crow’s Nest, with its custom-made bunk bed, is equally comfortable for adults and children.
Named one of the UK’s coolest seaside towns, Hastings’ enviable reputation is turning heads with an enticing mix of old and new, nearby attractions include Hastings Castle, Rebel Gallery and the Blue Reef Aquarium whilst on the beach the young and young at heart will find traditional amusements, fairground rides and crazy golf as well as the steepest funicular railway in Britain. There’s also a new theatre, events on the brand-spanking new multi-million pound pier and a great selection of restaurants and pubs, so plenty to keep you occupied, come rain or shine. Those looking to adventure a little further afield can take advantage of the home’s vintage Citroen CX during their stay.
