Tuesday on the Robert Scott Bell Show: Time to Oil Up!
The science behind the high-fat low-carb ketogenic diet has been around for years. It is a special diet originally developed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1920s as a cure for childhood epilepsy. A diet that is still used today, some children can become seizure free or nearly seizure free on the ketogenic diet, where drugs often fail.
In recent times, studies have been done on cancer patients using the ketogenic diet, using the theory that refined carbohydrates feed cancer cells, whereas a diet induced state of ketosis can starve cancer cells. One of the most widely used dietary oils in the ketogenic diet to induce ketosis is coconut oil.
A high-fat Mediterranean diet may protect against breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease, a new review finds. “If you adhere to a Mediterranean diet, you will probably have fewer heart attacks and strokes, and will be less likely to develop breast cancer and less likely to develop diabetes,” said study leader Dr. Hanna Bloomfield. She is a professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota and associate chief of staff for research at the Minneapolis VA.
Colleagues of the medical journal “JAMA” estimated the prevalence of diabetes among U.S. adolescents, the percentage of those who were unaware of their diabetes, and the prevalence of pre-diabetes using nationally representative data. “To our knowledge, these are the first estimates of diabetes in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents using all 3 American Diabetes Association recommended biomarkers. The estimates are higher than previously reported; 1 study found diagnosed diabetes in 0.34 percent of participants aged 10 to 19 years. A relatively large proportion was unaware of the condition, particularly among non-Hispanic black participants and Hispanic participants, indicating a need for improved diabetes screening among adolescents. These findings may have important public health implications because diabetes in youth is associated with early onset of risk factors and complications,” the authors write.
New data from researchers at the University of Copenhagen provides stronger evidence linking certain bacteria that populate our intestinal tract with a higher risk for developing insulin resistance, ultimately a precursor to developing diabetes.

Scientists are exploring if they can get the same result in chronic back pain and cancer-related fatigue.
Radiologists who graduated from medical school after 1940 are not at greater risk of death from chronic exposure to low levels of radiation, a new study reports. The researchers, from the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI), credited improvements in radiation protection, safety equipment and monitoring.
