Cuban President Raul Castro announced Monday that he is dispatching 9,000 soldiers to help keep the Zika virus out of Cuba, calling on the entire country to fight the mosquito that carries the disease. How are guns and camo going to get rid of mosquitoes? Brazil takes it one step further, deploying 200,000 soldiers, some armed with insect repellent!
Sadly, through an audacious political maneuver, The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is pushing a bill, HB 1164, attempting to hijack control of vaccine exemptions and force all families to submit it online directly to them for their storage and use. Current law requires parents of submit the exemption directly to the school where its use and disclosure is protected by the federal law FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Under FERPA, public schools are required to get written consent from the parent before their child’s private information could be shared. In the words of the sponsor of this offensive bill himself, Rep. Pabon: “This is the some of the most sensitive information the government can collect.”
Do we really need this kind of help?
But wait, they aren’t done! Another federal level policy is also being initiated that would allow the government to become “equal partners” in helping you raise your child. If this policy is implemented, will you be able to choose alternative forms of healthcare for your child or will Big Pharma step in to “engage” you in “caring” for your child’s “wellness”? Will you be able to home-school, or will the Department of Education step in to “encourage” you to send your child to a state-approved institutional “education” center of their own choosing? What about faith and religion?
And why now? In an age where the internet makes information more available than ever, parents have 
every resource already available to them. What does history teach us about government’s overreaching involvement in the education of youth? Are we listening, or will we allow a repeat of abuses? Parents do not need more information to raise their children, they need an economy that reduces inflation and allows a sustainable, healthy lifestyle, so that they can work less and spend more time actually parenting.
On to more positive news, someone who clearly cares about the next generation is former basketball star Ray Allen of the Miami Heat. He’s announced that his new venture will be an organic fast food restaurant called “Grown.” His store will officially open this March located at 8211 S. Dixie Hwy in South Miami. Road trip anyone?
Colorado starts work Friday on becoming the first state to regulate organic labels in its pot industry, with other legal weed states watching to see whether they too should step in to help consumers wondering what’s on their weed. Organic standards are regulated federally, and pot remains illegal at the federal level, meaning there’s nothing stopping commercial pot growers from calling their wares organic.
Using marijuana may lead in short order to using even more marijuana as well as abusing other drugs and alcohol, suggests a new analysis of U.S. data. Based on national surveys three years apart, researchers found that adults who reported using pot in the first survey were two to nine times more likely to have a substance abuse problem by the time of the second survey. Something to keep in mind is the nature and situation of the person trying pot originally. If they turning to weed as an escape, then they may be more likely to try other substances and fall into something more addictive, vs the person who chooses to handles depression or issues in a different way. Therefore, it is not use of pot that lead to other drugs, but the inclination and life-style of the person using.

Isaiah M. Aikens, 18, was indicted by a grand jury after Wyandot County detectives said he posed as a member of the 26th District and gave a speech at Mohawk High School in December. Do the police not have anything else to do? This seems more like a prank and less like a criminal. In this day and age, we should be impressed that an 18 year old had the confidence and initiative to go out and make a speech to inspire the youth of tomorrow!

Zika has been linked to birth defects. Now it may be causing paralysis?
The prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among teenage girls in the United States has dropped by more than 60 percent since the vaccine against the cancer-causing virus was introduced a decade ago, according to a new study. However, researchers are still disappointed that only 42% of girls in the recommended age rage have received the vaccine which requires 3 doses over 6 months. Could this drop in numbers also just be due to an increased awareness of the dangers of STD’s?
Well, March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and the perfect time to think about colon health. Less than half of people aged 50 and older get tested for colon cancer, but early detection can save lives. Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, yet it has a 90 percent cure rate when detected early, Rather than waiting around to see if we get it…what can we be doing pro-actively to detox and clean our gut and colon?? Remember, we have the ability every day to put good things into our system, and help the bad stuff get out.
Is there a treatment for cancer that is 10,000 times more effective than chemo? Yes, and it’s in your kitchen according to recently published study in PLoS. It indicates that a substance found in ginger called 6-shogaol is a potent agent in fighting breast cancer—much more potent than chemotherapy and much less dangerous. That’s fantastic news! Adding fresh ginger into the diet via cold-pressed juice is a great option for anyone!
It probably won’t seem like much of a surprise, but a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that a stunning number of Americans are still not getting enough sleep. According to a report from Entrepreneur, the latest surveys revealed that adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia are not getting the amount of sleep they need. 7 hours is the recommended amount, and apparently those in the mid-west plains states are the best rested. The further south you go, and especially Hawaii get the least sleep. Watch out for the walking dead in a Starbucks near you!
Speaking of sleep, having sleep apnea may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease, according to a report from Taiwan.After taking other health factors into account, sleep apnea increased the risk of kidney disease by 58%. By comparison, hypertension (a known risk factor for kidney disease) increased the risk by 17%. Diabetes was a stronger predictor than both other factors, more than doubling the risk of kidney disease, the research team reported online. In general, the healthier your body is, the better you will sleep, so all of this factors are tied together, and need to be treated in tandem.
Tonight, maybe try a little yoga or deep breathing before bed. Turn off your wifi, imagine your in the middle of no-where South Dakota…and sleep like a baby!
