Crepes Choupette, Tony’s Square Donuts, Phil’s Hairstyles, Open on Whitney Avenue in New Haven

New Haven – Yale University Properties announces three new additions to the Audubon Arts and Retail District with Crepes Choupette, Tony’s Square Donuts, and Phil’s Hairstyles hosting a Grand Opening Ceremony on Friday, December 11 at 11 a.m. with special guests Mayor Toni N. Harp and Alder Abigail Roth.

Crepes Choupette, located at 24 Whitney Ave., serves traditionally made French crepes by owner Adil Chokairy in the 770 sq. ft. space. What started as a food cart has blossomed into a quick-serve storefront for the Parisian entrepreneur behind a menu that includes crepes filled with Nutella and bananas or fig, prosciutto, arugula and goat cheese. Crepes Choupette is open Mon.-Tues. 7:30a.m. – 6p.m., Wed.-Fri. 7:30a.m. – 8p.m., Sat. 8:30a.m. – 5p.m., Sun. 9a.m. – 2p.m.

“I started off with a crepe tricycle and it took off very well and the feedback from people was amazing,” said Chokairy. “And then when the tricycle needed a home, that’s what pushed me to open the creperie.”

Tony’s Square Donuts, located directly next-door, has already made a splash in the culinary world by earning one of the top spots for “America’s 50 Best Donuts” from Saveur Magazine. Tony Poleshek has made a name for himself with his uniquely shaped donuts and a variety of flavors that include apple Dutch crumb, maple bacon, and peanut butter and jelly. Tony’s Square Donuts is open Mon.-Fri. 7:30a.m. – 5:30p.m., Sat-Sun. 8a.m. – 3p.m.

“I enjoy working with Yale University and the City of New Haven to serve unique donuts to our community,” said Poleshek. “I’m excited to be a part of the Audubon-Whitney neighborhood.”

Phil’s Hairstyles, located at 55 Whitney Ave., opened in the late spring and has grown into another successful New Haven venture for brothers Silvio and Pasquale DeSisto in the 630 sq. ft. barbershop and salon. Pasquale currently operates the original location on Wall Street in New Haven while his brother Silvio has taken the lead at the new Whitney Avenue shop. Phil’s Hairstyles is open Mon.-Fri. 8a.m.-7p.m., Sat. 8a.m.-5:30p.m., Sun. 10a.m.-3p.m.

“These are beautiful streets over here with a lot of traffic and a lot of nice people,” said Silvio DeSisto. “With the experience I’ve had, this was the best street for a new barber shop.”

“We are happy to welcome three outstanding businesses to Whitney Avenue with Crepes Choupette, Tony’s Square Donuts, and Phil’s Hairstyles,” said Lauren Zucker, Yale University Associate Vice President for New Haven Affairs and University Properties. “New Haven’s business climate continues to flourish and allow more businesses to open in the City.
