Connecticut’s Carnegie Libraries
Saturday, October 31, 3 pm | Ives
Connecticut has 11 Carnegie Libraries, and New Haven has 3 of them: Dixwell, Davenport, and Fair Haven ( the latter still operating as a library). Mary Donohue, Assistant Publisher of Connecticut Explored magazine, will discuss the history of Connecticut’s 11 Carnegie libraries: their funding by tycoon Andrew Carnegie, their architecture, and what they became.

The Bioswale in Mitchell Library’s Backyard
Monday, November 2, 6:30 pm | Mitchell
Dawn Henning, Project Manager for the City of New Haven’s Engineering Department and Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies graduate, presents on the bio-infiltration project at Mitchell Library, one of the largest green infrastructure projects currently underway in the City. Over 200 bioswales are planned for construction by 2017 as part of an initiative to strengthen the resiliency of New Haven against future storm events.

The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois

Jonathan Holloway received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1995 and is now the Edmund S. Morgan Professor of African American Studies, History, and American Studies and the Dean of Yale College. A specialist in post-emancipation United States history with a focus on cultural and intellectual history, Holloway has written many books on these topics and he authored the introduction and chronology and is editor of a new 2015 edition of W.E.B. Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk.

Writer and Director Christian Carion’s 2005 French film about the World War I Christmas truce of December 1914, is depicted through the eyes of French, Scottish and German soldiers. It was screened out of competition at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
Pelle the Conqueror

Running Time: 157 minutes | Danish and Swedish w/English subtitles
A 1987 Danish-Swedish drama film co-written and directed by Bille August that tells the story of two Swedish immigrants to Denmark, a father and son, who try to build a new life for themselves. Critically acclaimed, it won the Palme d’Or at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival, the 1988 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 1988 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

For local artist Barbara Mansilla paper is a fascinating medium forsculpture. Every piece of hers explores the endless possibilities that paper possesses when it comes to creating rich texture and intricate designs. Author Reading and Talk: Triumph by Judge Clarence Jones

Judge Clarence Jones is a former New Haven legal-aid and civil-rights lawyer who served 21 years as a state judge before retiring in 2010 before writing and publishing his first novel in 2015.
