Inside NHFPL

Meet NHFPL Staff Member: Sharon Lovett-Graff

Sharon Lovett-Graff is the branch manager of the Mitchell Library in Westville. Sharon started her career at the new Haven Free Public Library in 2001 as a children’s librarian, and she has spent time working in every branch! Sharon has a background in education and held jobs as a teacher, educational administrator and small business owner. She still enjoys working with children and tries to keep up with current trends in literature for children, teens, and adults. Sharon is originally from Chicago, Illinois, a city filled with fabulous libraries and great pizza! (Sorry New Haven natives.)

1) What is your role at the New Haven Free Public Library?

As a librarian and branch manager, I connect people to books and educational resources that will better their lives. I also connect people to one another. I meet great people in my job at the library!

2) What do you enjoy most about working at NHFPL?

What I enjoy most is welcoming new people to the library, telling them about the great resources we have, and about cool things happening in New Haven and Westville. I get to wear many hats in my job! But as a librarian I really like helping people find just the right book, movie, or resource. Customers that visit Mitchell Library have such varied interests that I am always learning new things from them. Together my customers and I build the library’s collection of books and materials. I also love creating programs and events with my customers and community members and giving people the opportunity to share their interests and expertise with one another, whether it is the knitting club leader teaching a newcomer how to knit, a local author speaking about her new book, or an artist sharing his work in our community room and gallery.

3) What book are you currently reading or is on your nightstand waiting to be explored?

I just finished The Map Trap, by children’s author Andrew Clements (great!), and I am currently reading an assortment of other books: Girls and Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape by Peggy Orenstein; Darktown, a new novel by Thomas Mullen; and The Gefilte Manifesto: New recipes for Old World Jewish Foods by Jeffrey Yoskowitz and Liz Alpern.
