Afghan Post: One Soldier’s Correspondence from

America’s Forgotten War

After seven years in the Army Infantry, where he reached the rank of Captain, Adrian Bonenberger resigned his commission in 2012 in order to pursue a writing career. He is a contributor to blogs in The New York Times and

8th annual celebration of the personal essay

with author Anne Fadiman and her students

Anne Fadiman has been Yale’s Francis Writer-in-Residence since 2005. She is the author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and two essay collections, Ex Libris and At Large and At Small. She will read from her introduction to The Opposite of Loneliness, a forthcoming collection by her late student Marina Keegan ’12. 

This year’s students include Eric Boodman, Sarah Maslin and Daniel Stern.

 

 

Remembering Pete Seeger

Saturday, Mar. 8, 1-4:30 pm

 

1 pm   Warm up with a film:  Pete Seeger, The Power of Song (93 min.)  Seeger helped introduce America to its own musical heritage, devoting his life to using the power of song as a force for social change. 

 

2:30 pm   Folksingers Open Mic   We’ll provide the mic, you bring your instrument of choice, and we’ll celebrate the memory of Pete Seeger in the best way, with live music! Sign up begins at 1 pm. NHFPL Librarian Sam Perduta will MC.

Program includes works by Barrios, Tansman, Berkley, Bach and Albéniz.

Endrikat has won many prizes in national competitions in Germany and Canada. She is currently pursuing her Masters of Music in Guitar Performance at Yale University School of Music.

Photographer Mario Quiroz’ exhibit supports legislative passage of the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which addresses current gaps in legal protection for domestic workers, including working conditions, living wage, sick days, vacation and job injuries. “It’s just common sense to take care of those who take care of our families,” he says.

These two online resources engage primary studentsand reinforce core reading skills. They pair fiction and nofiction books from Scholastic with classic Weston Woods videos to reinforce reading skills and develop essential real-world knowledge and understanding.

Children can read on any library computer or from home by using their NHFPL library card. There are picture books, easy readers, and non-fiction titles. The books can be read on the screen page-by-page or you can click to watch an animated book-video.There are hundreds of wonderful books to explore–click on the pictures to get started!
