Free Concert on the Green August 2

Come to the New Haven Green this Saturday, August 2 for a free summer concert! The NHSO Jazz Sextet will perform at 6:00pm, followed by the dynamic Brubeck Brothers Quartet at 7:30pm.

The NHSO Jazz Sextet is comprised of Symphony members Millie Piekos and Stephanie Hug, violins, Gretchen Frazier, viola, Rebecca Patterson, cello, Jim Andrews, bass, and Tim Moran, saxophone. They will perform an all-Gershwin program that includes hot summer tunes like Someone to Watch Over Me,Fascinating Rhythm, I Got Rhythm, The Man I Love, and Embraceable You. The highlight of the program will be Scenes from Porgy and Bess, with its immortal songSummertime. These tunes were arranged for saxophonist Fred Hemke by arranger Jonah Blum. Mr. Hemke appeared as a soloist with the Symphony this past season.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is an exciting jazz group featuring four outstanding musicians: Dan Brubeck on drums, Chris Brubeck on bass & trombone, Mike DeMicco on guitar and Chuck Lamb on piano. Their collective approach to their own compositions and tunes written by their legendary father, Dave Brubeck, have thrilled audiences all over the world. They recently toured Russia selling out the major concert halls of Moscow and St. Petersburg and were also invited to play the biggest jazz festivals in North America including the Monterey, Montreal and Playboy Jazz Festival. This August, they return to the legendary Newport Jazz Festival for the 3rd time. Their latest CD, Lifetimes, was loved by jazz radio across America and ended up in the top ten of the most played CDs of the year. On stage they present a high energy exploration of their own tunes plus contemporary versions of such Brubeck classics as Blue Rondo a la Turk, Kathy’s Waltz, and Take Five. Boston Globe wrote “the the BBQ bring a new energy to straight ahead jazz.” After their June 2014 appearance at the Rochester International Jazz festival the City Newspaper wrote:

“Regardless of origin, each piece flowed from the Quartet with impeccable ease. I have never seen an act that felt more at home on stage. Each member’s instrument seemed like an extension of his body, and it all came together to create a perfect storm of quick rhythms and complicated chords.”

In a Los Angeles Times review of their performance last year at the Monterey Jazz Festival, M.J. Katz wrote:

“Capping the set off was Take Five in which Dan Brubeck breathed new life into the obligatory drum solo, taking a turn that might have become de riguer and treating the audience to as fine an extended performance as has been rendered on one of jazz’s most famous tunes.”

@NHSO will be live-Tweeting song titles and fun facts in real time – get in on the conversation using #NHSO!
