Merck & Co – Principal Scientist Genomics – BIO004328

Description

Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. Today, we are building a new kind of healthcare company – one that is ready to help create a healthier future for all of us.

Our ability to excel depends on the integrity, knowledge, imagination, skill, diversity and teamwork of an individual like you. To this end, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect, encouragement and teamwork. As part of our global team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.

We are seeking a scientist experienced in applied genomics technologies, including next generation sequencing (NGS), to join the Department of Genetics & Pharmacogenomics (GpGx) at MRL Boston. Our mission in GpGx is to leverage human genetics and cutting edge molecular biology technologies to identify and functionally validate novel targets and pathways for therapeutic intervention. The successful candidate for this position will direct and execute the operations of a NGS team, including project design, execution, data delivery, and analysis. Primary responsibilities entail the hands-on application of a wide range of NGS technologies, including RNAseq and a diversity of custom solutions directed towards immuno-oncology and the functional validation of human genetic targets. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a trusted and nimble team that partners with biologists and bioinformaticians to leverage genetics and genomics to rapidly advance therapeutic targets.

The responsibilities of the candidate include, but are not limited to:

Leading a NGS core facility that includes both internal and external sequencing capacity

Application of a wide range of genomic technologies (RNAseq, WES, WGS) to target validation and biomarker discovery

Staying up-to-date on emerging NGS technologies such as nanopore sequencing and automated library preparation instrumentation

Working closely with a team of biologists and bioinformaticians to design and execute experiments that answer key questions about genetic targets and disease pathways

Written and verbal communication of study results to project teams, including proposals for further experiments to validate key findings

Qualifications

Education:

Ph.D. with a minimum of 8 years of industry or academic experience in genomics

Required:

An understanding of human genetics and the genetic basis of human disease

Experience in the operations of a NGS core facility

Deep understanding and hands-on experience with a wide range of genomic technologies including NGS (RNAseq, WES, WGS), mid-density profiling (e.g. Fluidigm, Nanosting), qPCR, and ddPCR

Automated NGS library construction and QC on the Ilumina platform

Ability to analyze and transfer NGS data in a UNIX computing environment

Excellent communication skills (written and oral) and outstanding teamwork capabilities; must be able to interact constructively with across groups throughout Merck and with outside collaborators

Experience in a role requiring collaboration within an organization, as well as a demonstrated ability to work with efficiency and diplomacy as part of a team effort

Demonstrated capacity and initiative to solve problems with energy and positive attitude

Preferred:

People management

Experience in leading collaborations

Experience in technologies for genomic profiling of single-cells, whole blood, and FFPE-preserved tissues

Experience with genomic screening of transcriptional signatures using functional cellular assays

Experience with a variety of manual and automated technologies for nucleic acid isolation from both solid and liquid tissues (frozen- and FFPE-preserved)

An understanding of immunology/immuno-oncology, cell signalling, and tools for characterization of immune response to experimental and therapeutic perturbation

Our employees are the key to our company’s success. We demonstrate our commitment to our employees by offering a competitive and valuable rewards program. Our Company’s benefits are designed to support the wide range of goals, needs and lifestyles of our employees, and many of the people that matter the most in their lives.
