Pharmacists protest

There will be just 12 pharmacies open in the Var today, and 16 in the Alpes-Maritimes, as pharmacists start to protest at the de-regulation proposals facing their profession. A go-slow has been organized along the A8 motorway eastbound from Antibes to Nice from 9 till 10 am and then on the Promenade des Anglais before a demonstration and rally in front of the préfecture at 10.30 and in Place Masséna at 12.30 pm . Pharmacists are not happy at plans to allow some medecins to be more widely available in other shops.

Creche sentences confirmed

Three creche employees who were each given suspended eight month prison sentences for involuntary manslaughter last year in Nice have had the sentences confirmed on appeal in Aix en Provence. The three were convicted after a child was found dead after getting his head stuck in the bars of a gate at a crèche in Nice in 2011.

Corsica drug arrests

Six people were arrested at home and one outside a school in Montesoro,  Corsica and are all being held in custody on sale of cannabis charges. The person initially arrested outside the school was in the process of selling the drug.

Bastia swastikas

Also on Corsica, police are investigating after two swastikas were found daubed on to the wall of a synagogue in Bastia with black spray paint. Alex Yebgui of the Beth Meir synagogue said it is testament to rising anti-semitism in France.

Planes and trains

Things are mostly back to normal following the Air France strike although not entirely. With crews being shifted around as well as planes, there are still two departures and two arrivals on the Nice-Paris run cancelled today. Apart from those a normal service resumes but check before you travel.

On the trains, major works on tunnels resume between Nice and Menton so the 13000 commuters a day who use this stretch to get in to work every day will be affected until April next year.

More news on the forthcoming Var rally at the end of November. Not only will nine time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb be on the start line, but so will his wife Séverine, who will be his co-pilot in the event.

The marine conservation charity Sea Shepherd has released footage of Brigitte Bardot making a rare visit to the port of St Tropez as part of her 80th birthday celebrations. As a long time animal rights campaigner, she is a good friend of Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd’s founder, and she was down at the port for a photo shoot with the crew of the ‘Brigitte Bardot’ , the eco-trimaran vessel named in her honour, in her first visit to the port for a decade.

The Algerian journalist Kamel Daoud has been named winner of one of the biggest world prizes for French literature, for his novel Mersault, the counter-enquiry. He will collect the Prix des cinq continents de la Francophonie ,  in Dakar on 28 November, during the Francophonie summit.

French supermarket chain Auchan has apologised after its sales brochure featured a black plastic toy gun, resembling an AK47 assault rifle and featuring a crescent moon and star, symbols that are generally associate with Islam.

Business-

Japan’s Nikkae 225 is trading 1.5 percent lower after data showed an unexpected fall in industrial output.

Output fell by 1.5 percent last month-economists had expected an increase of 0.2 percent.

South Korea also posted a 3.8 percent drop in factory output for August-its worst monthly fall since 2008.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index has fallen by 1.4 percent today as investors remain nervous over pro-democracy demonstrations.

The European Commission is expected to outline its case against Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland later today.

In a report into a wider investigation into tax policies in Ireland.the Netherlands and Luxembourg,the Commission is trying to establish whether unfair favouritism has been granted to large multinationals including Apple,Fiat and Starbucks.

It’s expected that the EU will make a case that Apple’s tax arrangements with Ireland amount to illegal state aid.

The Commision will also outline its reasons for launching an investigation into Fiat Finance and Trade,which is resident in Luxembourg for tax purposes.

And-In the UK Lloyds Banking group has sacked 8 employees following an investigation into the manipulation of some key interest rates set in London.

The bank’s chairman,Lord Blackwell says that the actions of those responsible for the misconduct were ‘completely unacceptable’.

In July Lloyds was fined 218 million pounds for ‘serious misconduct’ over the setting of the Libor interbank interest rate.

Lloyds says that the individuals responsible have also forfeited 3 million pounds in unpaid bonuses.

Football-The pressure is growing on the Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew after his side were beaten 1-0 at Stoke City last night.

The result keeps the Magpies joint bottom of the Premier League with just 3 points from 6 games.

There was 1 game in the Scottish Championship last night.Hibs beat Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox.

Cricket-Scotland have suffered a humiliating defeat in their opening World Cup warm up tour down under.

The Scots were hammered by 186 runs by Tasmania in Hobart.They were bowled out for 117 after the home side had made 303-4 from their 50 overs.

Rugby Union-Injuries to Tom Wood,Courtney Lawes and Alex Corbisiero are not expected to affect their availability for England’s autumn internationals.

The Northampton trio are suffering from back and shoulder injuries but coach Jim Mallinder says that he thinks the situation is not too bad.

James Hook will continue at fly-half for Gloucester despite an indifferent start to the season.

Director of Rugby David Humphries says that the Wales international needs more time to show his best form and he needs more game time to adapt to the type of play that Gloucester is trying to establish.
