After starting his rookie year with the Rockets, Scott Machado was waived by Houston in January only to sign on full-time with their NBADL affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Though his playing time in RGV had slowly begun to creep up, he was soon after traded to the Santa Cruz Warriors. While it's undeniable that Machado has borderline NBA-level type talent if one takes the time to watch his savvy playmaking ability, he still served as a reserve off the bench in Santa Cruz. Playing the rest of the season for the Warriors' minor league affiliate, he appeared in 10 games, averaging 6.5 points and 3.4 assists in 15 minutes per contest.
Due to his steady abilities and mature floor general instincts, it's easy to recognize that Machado can continuously be considered on the cusp of making it back to The Association once again. Having joined Santa Cruz midseason, it's also easy to suggest that despite his talent level, perhaps the coaching staff it didn't consider it ideal to thrust Machado into a starting role in front of second year NBADL starter (third-year player) Stefhon Hannah.
When push came to shove earlier this week, however, it was backup SCW guard Machado (and not Hannah, or anyone else, for that matter) who received an NBA call-up by the Golden State Warriors. He was signed to a ten-day pact.
This all said, Machado was immediately and subsequently assigned back to Santa Cruz, just in time to continue helping the team out during the playoffs. Given that he had already been playing for the minor league squad in the first place, it's sensible to speculate that perhaps the Warriors organization was feeling or facing pressure from another NBA team that wanted to sign Machado for themselves as well.
The fact that Machado is back in Santa Cruz means that Golden State wasn't looking for immediate point guard help upon signing him. Because they had the roster spot available, however, perhaps the organization didn't mind allowing Machado to occupy it for a bit if that meant ultimately keeping him in the fold for however much longer. If nothing else, Machado will stay aboard for Santa Cruz's first round playoff series this week, and if he is awarded another ten-day contract (or just subsequently returns to the D-League if not signed by another NBA team), he could stay in town should the team advance as well.
Despite this suggested logic and deductive reasoning, sources close to the situation tell RidiculousUpside.com that Machado could go on to ultimately sign a non-guaranteed multi-year contract with Golden State, much like the one he signed with Houston last offseason. Such a deal would keep him a Warrior for the remainder of the season, and give the organization the flexibility to keep him aboard for future season(s), if so desired.
Machado shares similar roots with GSW head coach Mark Jackson, as both are born and bred Queens, New York point guard products. At least that appears to be in the young gun's favor.
