Born on 11 June 1959, to Patricia and William George Ranald Mundell Laurie, Hugh is youngest of four children. He spent his formative years in Oxford, along with his two sisters Janet and Susan and one brother, Charles Alexander Lyon.
For primary education, Laurie was enrolled into the “Dragon School”. Later he attended Eton College, which is an English independent boarding school. While studying at Selwyn College, Cambridge, he even joined the university dramatic club, in order to pursue his passion, which was acting.
