No phones running Sailfish OS were unveiled at Mobile World Congress Shanghai
NOT YET!
Sailfish OS, operating system developed by Finnish Jolla Ltd. is aiming to be the 3rd OS in mobile world. So where are the devices?
Intex Aqua Fish - Sailfish OS smartphones manufactured in India
Worth a read? Please share:
This was supposed to be a spectacular spec post, but see what it turned into... Intex didn't share even drawings yet. But Intex Technologies Head, Mobile Business, Sanjay Kalirona said at the Mobile World Congress to Indiatimes.com:
"We plan to launch the first Sailfish device in November. It will be 4G-enabled and will come under the sub-10K price range"
Two Intex Aqua Fish smartphones were expected to be unveiled today, after Intex published a short video clip yesterday for a moment. The video was soon held back, and no phones were unveiled at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2015. The name remains, visible on the booth.
All I can be useful with, on this post, is to put the facts and rumors in order, for our readers to not get mixed with specs and prices shared elsewhere:
Facts
We have the statement above by Intex, and one shared on Jolla Press release
We don't know any of the specs, not RAM, not screen size, not even the processor. And definitely not the TOH compatibility, asked by many
We don't know the amount of smartphone models to be launched on this year
We don't even know the amount of manufacturers, except for one (Intex)
We don't know the final prices of any of the models
We do know that Intex Tecnologies is launching Sailfish OS smartphones (in plurar) by the end of this year to the markets in India
We do know that the device demoing Sailfish OS in the Mobile World Congress Shanghai was only a reference device
We do know that Sailfish OS 2.0 is available on Qualcomm Snapdragon series 200, 600 and 800. But by this information, we can only guess the series of the processors
Jolla Phone or Intex phone?
Rumors
Reference device used at Intex booth looks like a Jolla Phone, just in different covers, and it was used to showcase Sailfish OS 2.0. It might have had a demo version of the operating system as well.
Price INR 15000 (EUR 215) has been mentioned by an Intex representative, but not related to any specific model.
On a shortly published video two different sized Sailfish OS models were shown. As not shared any more, video can't be used as a source of information - everything seen on such video might even have been cancelled later
Snapdragon 410 and 600 series have been mentioned, but not connected to any specific phone models
It's shared that Intex plans to expand availability of Sailfish OS as worldwide. No schedule for this, might be just a wishful plan.
"In few months", "October", "September", and "November" are mentioned for launch. Nobody has mentioned December ;) Oops, I just did, so that's not true any more...
So what do we have?
We have Jolla's press release, big things shared according to Jolla and their partners. But nothing to see yet from Intex. They actually haven't even told if the reference device was manufactured by them or not. But Intex has shared this much:
"Together with the Sailfish India ecosystem partners we believe that we can provide an exciting alternative for smartphone lovers in India and later globally as well."
Epilogue
Sorry for this post, I wrote it a bit frustrated, as I had some expectations too for today. What was ment to be the greatest part today turned out as zero, so please take it as a post written in a wrong mood. However, please check the previous three news parts - they have something at least ;)
And this one was a good tweet, by the way:
.@IntexBrand will announce the @JollaHQ partnership tomorrow with sailfish 2.0 OS on aqua fish at #MWCS15 @TheQuint pic.twitter.com/5juIGsv2xR
