Annexure - II

Abstract of Ph. D. Thesis

Interaction of  pesticides and trace metals with some representative soils of

India

were investigated. The results of the experiments carried out in laboratory / greenhouse conditions could be summarised as follows :

1.
The mobility of Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, and Ag  (Non-essential and toxic metals for plant growth) and Dimethioate,  Phosphamidon, Dichlorovos and Malathion   ( Organo-phosphorus insecticides) follows the order : Cr > Ni > Pb > Ag > Cd and Dimethioate > Phosphamidon > Malathion > Dichlorovos. For this, soil properties, characteristics of organic and inorganic chemicals were found to have a significant influence on their movement.

2.
Toxic metal  (lead) and Carbamate fungicides ( Methyl 2-Benzimidazole Carbamate, MBC ) was observed for their adsorption mechanism with Na-, Ca- and Mg- saturated illites. Thermodynamic parameters and adsorption constants were calculated that shows the involvement of week forces.

3.
Another part of study shows that the plant growth and nutrients concentration increases at the low level of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni application while decreases at high levels. Threshold concentration of these heavy metals and their toxicity index have been calculated to suggest the maximum permissible limits of these heavy metals.

Abstract of Post-doctoral work

1.
Soil Pollution and EIA studies  :

The general goal of our post-doctoral research have been towards understanding the problem of soil pollution and its low cost remedy. For which we have carried out experiments on various organic substances containing multiple adsorption sites in reducing heavy metal accumulation in soils. Since many organic wastes are capable of precipitating heavy metals in water, it is desirable to use this property in the treatment of waste water for agricultural use. Heavy metals such as Pb , Cd , and Ni , etc. are also being screened for the growth of certain edible crops and their concentration in different parts of the plant

2.     Heavy metals and Pesticides interactions in soil :

Heavy metals ( such as Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ag, and Ni etc.)  and some persistent pesticides translocation in soil causes a long term risk of soil pollution. They poses a threat to enter in food chain through water absorption by plants. Our aim of study was to observe the effects of various factors like organic matter, pH, exchangeable cations, sesquioxides and anionic species on their movement in soils. The technique used was soil thin layer chromatography ( Soil TLC) which is simple, reproducible, and inexpensive. The adsorption characteristics of these chemicals were also screened under different environmental conditions. Soil TLC was also applied for studying the mobility of anions in soil.

3.     Soil Respiration and Nutrients Availability   :

Microbial population have been observed to be affected by the presence of heavy metals and organic substrate in soil. Efforts are being made to study the effects of heavy metal - organic complexes which are generally found in industrial and municipal waste waters on the microbial activities and availability of major nutrients like  NH4+- , NO3 - ,  NO2 - N , P  and  K  in soils under various environmental conditions.
