Last night, Oct. 23, ASMP hosted the NY Image14 Winners Exhibition opening at the Chelsea 27 Art Space. The exhibit was the result of a two category contest—student and professional—judged by a panel that included five industry experts and influences from the fine-art, editorial, media and advertising fields.

With 22 images by 20 artists displayed, from fine-art portraits to conceptual American themes, the event welcomed ASMP members, Chelsea art scene enthusiasts, and, of course, the student and professional photographers who took the shots. For each category, the show featured three winners, honorable mentions and judges selections.

“It was interesting to see the results because each judge is from a different background and looks for different things in a photography,” said Judge and Senior Art Director at JWT Barbara Graetzer. “But in the end it was a collective decision.”

According to Graetzer, there were over 500 submissions and the judging process began with their individual choices during the first round. For the second round, judges compiled their picks and decided on the winners. The remainder of the panel included Directory of Photography at Self Magazine Jean Cabacungan-Jarvis, Hasted Krauetler Gallery Manager Barbara Moreira, along with photo editors from Time Magazine and The New York Times Magazine.

Many of the artists offered their work for sale at the show, while a portion of the proceeds was donated to the ASMP Legal Action Fund which was setup to protect photographers’ interests through advocacy, action in the courts and legislature. “ASMP’s efforts in legal arena have benefited all individual creators. We have assisted photographers and other creators in legal actions from small claims courts to the U.S. Supreme Court. Each court decision has an impact on the community of photography and the broader creative community.”
