Key speakers in Logroño: Dr. Josu Ahedo and Prof. Dr. Daniel Burgos

Last Tuesday UNIR presented the translation into Spanish of the the NMC Horizon Report > 2013 Higher Education Edition which is part of the Horizon Report series published by New Media Consortium (NMC).

NMC is a community of experts in educational technologies from all around the world. The work of NMC is internationally recognized for its research on cutting edge technologies. Its scientific publications are known and used in more than 100 countries. The Horizon Reports are produced in the frame of the NMC Horizon Project, a decade-long research project designed to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching, and creative inquiry in higher education. UNIR strongly supports scientific dissemination at a general level, and it is pleased to have collaborated in this initiative with NMC.

The event, co-organized at the same time in Logroño (La Rioja, Spain) and Madrid, has focused on the presentation of the main emerging technologies likely to have an impact on the future educational community during the next five-year-period, and which are described in the NMC Horizon Report: 2013 Higher Education Edition.

In Logroño, Prof. Dr. Daniel Burgos, Vice-chancellor for Research and Technology of UNIR and Editor of the Spanish version, presented the main conclusions of the Report. Josu Ahedo, Vice-chancellor of Students and Academic Quality of UNIR, also attended the event.

In the meanwhile, the presentation held in Madrid, was opened by José Antonio Ibáñez-Martín, Vice-chancellor for Teacher Organization at UNIR and Director of the “Educacción” Research Group. Jorge Sáinz, General Director of University Policies of the Spanish Ministry of Education, highlighted the importance of the work carried out by UNIR, stating that the Horizon Report has a significant impact among Spanish speaking teachers, students and the academic community at international level. The report was introduced by Dr. Rubén González, Vice-Dean of the School of Engineering at UNIR.

According to the report, the technologies that will be adopted by universities in one year or less are the MOOC (Massively Open Online Courses) and Tablet Computing. In the meantime, technologies, such as Gamification and Learning Analytics will have a significant influence in the field in two or three years. In five years, 3D printing and wearable technology will have an important role in higher education.
