What Is Elk River Healthy Lifestyles?

Elk River Healthy Lifestyles, one of the programs of The Pinnacle Schools, Inc., is a weight management program for youths, ages twelve to eighteen. The program focuses on positive behaviors and nutrition, at the same time building self-esteem for the troubled teens. A healthy diet, physical activities, and therapies are combined in order for the teens to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to make concrete choices. It is a developmentally sensitive, multi-disciplinary, and medically-based approach designed to deal with the core issues of food addiction, co-dependency, and depression in order to achieve overall positive results.

Health risks of obese teens can include neurological impairments, joint pain, respiratory problems, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure or hypertension, and diabetes. Obese teens often struggle with psychological and social dilemmas lie low activity or sedentary level; alcohol/drug/food addiction; disordered eating patterns; online gaming addiction; impulsiveness; depression; anger; anhedonia, apathetic, or passiveness; low self-esteem; truancy; poor relationships with peers; deficiency in health maintenance attitudes; and poor school performance.

The Elk River Healthy Lifestyles Program

Located in Huntsville, Alabama, Elk River Healthy Lifestyles provides an environment of challenge, acceptance, and respect where each teenager can become educated, self-directed, and good member of the community. Each teen in the program has an individualized program to address his/her unique needs. Nutrition education, fitness, academics, and intensive counseling are part of the state-of-the-art program. Nutritional assessments and once a week clinical exercise aid in safe weight loss.

Group counseling, as well as individual counseling sessions, is designed to discover the causes of the teen’s eating disorder. Topics like depression, food addiction, stress management, healthy self-sustaining behaviors, self-esteem, co-dependency, and limit setting are part of the counseling program. Elk River Healthy Lifestyles equips each teen with the necessary tools for motivation and self-confidence in maintaining his/her ideal weight. The program also offers education from grades 6 to 12. The parents are also provided with a workbook where they learn nurturing techniques, healthy limit setting, expressive communication, and family-based problem solving. A three-day family workshop is also offered at the end of the program so that the family reconnects with each other while supporting each other for the life-long success of the weight management plan.
