A NEW  OLD STYLE

Small log homes; whether as a second home, a place in the mountains or your primary residence, are in fashion today like never before. And, your first consideration might be whether to build from the ground up or buy a more twenty-first century version. If you’re on a budget, some of the “kits”, including the cheapest log home kits, may come to mind, as they offer the most cost-efficient living accommodations. There’s really a lot out there.

Search log home kit, modular log cabin homes or prefab log home using the Bing Custom Search (right).

The benefits to living in any smaller home—if you’re downsizing or empty-nesting—can be easy to adjust to for most people and, if a more pioneering spirit is in your blood, there is no doubt that small log homes offer friendly and comfortable lifestyles. You can even have it outfitted with the most up to date techno-marvels the retailers have to offer!

There are a few things you have to think about, though. Remember; this is not the eighteenth century, and the building codes apply to log homes the same as any other single family residence. Only if you can find a county where those codes don’t come to play can you chop the logs and chink the walls however you wish. Good luck.

Also, there are many options you might want to consider (see below) if you love the idea of small log homes or cabins, and even ways you can make your home in the city fit this lifestyle.

MODULAR LOG HOMES

Modular log homes are more affordable than you might think and they are the “greener” option, because many are built in controlled environments with energy efficiency in mind. Also, there is less building material waste because they’re built to governmental specifications. If you’re considering a small log home, think about the “more space for your money” aspect of going modular, not to mention that once your foundation is ready, your new home can be transported, assembled and have the finishing touches added in a very short time.

MOBILE LOG HOMES

Mobile log homes are a fairly new concept. They offer a more “personalized” appearance, but are built on the same concept as any other mobile home. They’re on wheels, can be moved, and take up no more space than a standard mobile home.

They all have bedrooms, baths, kitchens and enough space for a family to live comfortably. The facades are really the main difference and these trailers can be installed in any trailer park or rural property just like their metal counterparts. They just look like small log homes!

LOG HOME KITCHEN

Log home kitchens can be created in any home, anywhere! If that’s your thing, and you like where you now live, go for it! You may be the talk of the neighborhood, and maybe even thought of as somewhat of a pioneer.

With a little creativity and research, you could be “cookin’ in the woods” (with your built-in microwave/convection oven combo) just down the street from the mall! The only consideration—as usual—are the codes.
