Bathrooms are such a necessary part of modern living (modern plumbing is the one exclusion that everyone makes when they dream of living in former, simpler times, right?). But all too often, bathrooms are completely utilitarian and dark, stale places in our homes. It doesn’t have to be so, but bathrooms are often the last place on the list to get a spruce, since we are dreaming of spacious kitchens, stunning bedrooms, and even amazing laundry and mudrooms. So when I see a gorgeous bathroom like this stunning and elegant master bath remodel, I am anxious to share it.

But our guest today has done an amazing job of remodeling her master bath, and she didn’t even have to spend millions of dollars like Gwyneth did. Poor Gwyn, if only she knew the secrets of the DIYers! But now, I’ll let our guest Courtney tell you all about her completely stunning master bath remodel — and it has built-in shelving. *swoon*
Elegant Master Bath Remodel

Hi there! My name is Courtney and I blog at Golden Boys and Me about DIY projects in our suburban split level home. When we purchased our home 7 years ago, it was more to move into a great school system for our 3 boys than because we loved the house itself. Every room in the house needed saving updating from the outdated 80s decor. Our budget to complete each of these projects has never been large. I am forever on the hunt for creative ways to add affordable charm to our home. My husband, Billy, brings my ideas to life with his ever growing DIY skills (this is our 3rd home that we have remodeled). Our Ikea Hack Kitchen Island is one of our most popular projects. We also hacked some Ikea bookshelves to create a small mudroom in our family room.
I was thrilled to be contacted by Remodelaholic asking to feature our master bath! We recently completed this project and it is one of my favorite spaces in the house. Our budget was not huge at about $7,000, but my dream bathroom board on Pinterest was! I scoured the internet and home improvement stores and put together an affordable version of that dream bathroom. We started with an awkward combination of a vanity area and small bathroom (tiny shower stall and single sink). These two spaces were separated by a door, and each had their own closet. It functioned as poorly as it looked. Here is a before picture. The space was so tight that it was impossible to get a decent picture.
Here is the mood board I created. We originally planned to use floor tile that looked like hardwood, but changed our minds and went with white tile. We also didn’t think that the shower glass would fit into our budget so that is why I included a shower curtain on the mood board.
We knocked down the wall and removed both closets and were left with a decent sized Master Bathroom at 11ft by 8ft. We didn’t want to move the plumbing so we kept it where it was and added an additional sink and a pedestal tub. The walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. The beadboard (on the ceiling and wall) was purchased at Home Depot and came prefinished.
Because we lost 2 linen closets, I was a bit worried about a lack of storage space. We added these built-ins surrounding the door and they have worked out really well. Our lighting was purchased at Home Depot.com (Waterton sconces) and Overstock.com (chandelier).
My husband also added a niche into the shower wall before tiling. It is so convenient and doesn’t waste any space in our small shower. The sliding shower doors were purchased online at Costco.com. They were a huge cost saver. I loved the look of frameless shower doors but if we had purchased custom made panels it would have cost half of our total budget. The glass and shower base came in at under $1,000.
The acrylic tub was purchased at Vintage Tub and Bath, as were the faucets for both the tub and shower.
The mirrors were purchased at Lowes and I was thrilled to find them. I had seen a mirror that was similar years ago, but with a much higher price tag. Unfortunately, Lowes currently doesn’t have them online.
I love how light and bright this space is. We’ve been using this bathroom for about 6 months now and I do not find the white hard to keep clean at all and it is a great space to retreat to when I need a few minutes to myself. With a little bit of homework and legwork, and a bunch of sweat equity, we created the dream bathroom that we could afford. Please feel free to ask me any specific questions in the comments.
