YouTube’s partnership programme is a revenue-sharing programme that allows creators and producers of original content to earn money from their popular videos on YouTube. People can earn revenue from relevant advertisements that run against their video using Google’s proprietary technology and is based on cost-per-impression advertising. The programme has more than 20,000 partners to date, across 22 countries. To continue bringing new entertainment and experiences to a wide audience, YouTube developed the YouTube Partner Program in which content creators have more opportunities to produce a bigger range of original videos.

A Different Kind of Makeup Artist

Phan was born in Massachusetts and is of Vietnamese descent. Both her mother and father were born in Vietnam. Her mother raised her in Massachusetts, California and Florida after her parents divorced when Phan was a child. Her family was poor but resourceful and, at times, used food stamps.

Phan began her artistic training at the age of 12, teaching herself how to paint with watercolors and oil paints. Initially, Phan was interested in pursuing a career in dermatology but instead pursued the arts throughout college. She enrolled at Ringling College of Art and Design and majored in Illustration. In addition to her interests in the arts and beauty, Phan has also expressed an interest in branching into the gaming industry. Phan is also known by the screen name “Rice Bunny” which she has used on the social networking site Xanga since 2004 and currently on micro blogging service Twitter.

Phan is known for her video production style that incorporates her voiceover instruction with music and text subtitles. Her videos are produced entirely using a MacBook Pro.Popular beauty tutorials released on Phan’s YouTube channel have included her “Romantic Valentine Look”, “Brighter Larger Looking Eyes”, “Makeup For Glasses”, and “Mysterious Masquerade Look”. Her most popular videos include the “Lady Gaga Poker Face Tutorial” with over 13,000,000 video views on YouTube, “Romantic Valentine Look” and “Seductive Vampire”. In January Michelle used special effects in her new Lady Gaga Bad Romance video, the first for a makeup guru. The BuzzFeed profiled Phan on January 23, 2009 overnight, turning it into a viral video.

Phan’s beauty tutorials have garnered her significant press and recognition across the globe.Phan appeared in the August 2009 issue of Seventeen Magazine, the St. Petersburg Times on August 23, 2009, and the Sun Sentinel on August 24, 2009, and on the popular blog Bella Sugar on April 19, 2009.

Further evidencing her international appeal, Phan was also recently featured in a Chilean newspaper for her Barbie video. While her career started with YouTube, her opportunities are growing beyond it.

In 2010, Lancôme hired her to create makeup videos to highlight its products, while Brides Magazine signed her as a video blogger for its site. Not to be outdone, YouTube even tapped her to help produce content for its “For All Women Network,” or FAWN, premium channel. And Glamhouse teamed up with her to create a line of jewelry, called “Ever Eden.”She’s also moved to LosAngeles to co-found a subscription-based makeup start-up, called Ipsy.

As her career skyrockets and she explores new avenues, she still keeps an eye, and her attention, on the source of her success: the audience YouTube helped her find and develop. She hasn’t forgot her humble roots, telling Seventeen magazine that Wet’ N’ Wild eyeliners is always a staple in her purse because they’re “amazing and they’re like 99 cents.” As she became an online sensation, she also kept her feet very much rooted in her broader offline community as well. In 2009, for example, she helped organize a fashion show that raised $21,000 to help pay for the hospital fees of an 18-year-old Vietnamese woman who was brutally assulted in her former town of Tampa.

But taking a breath to look back on her amazingly short, but packed, career to date, she told The Insider her financial success helped her realize a lifelong goal to help ease her mother into retirement.

Phan began posting video tutorials in 2007, when YouTube was in its infancy. The site helped her develop a very direct and intimate connection to an audience hungry for step-by-step information — directions they could use and experiment with in the privacy of their own home. And as YouTube’s influence grew, so did hers. YouTube was born on April 23, 2005, when its founders uploaded a brief video at San Diego Zoo. The site, fueled in large part by amateur videos of cute babies and kittens, skyrocketed and a year later, with an estimated 50 million users, Google bought it for $1.7 billion.

In response to a Tampa sexual assault case, Phan helped organize a charity fashion show called Fashion for Compassion in September of 2008, raising over $20,000 for the victim. Modern-day stars online and off use its revolutionary reach to not just catapult them to fame and fortune, but generate substantial sums on the way up. Part of that reason is the disruptive changes it’s had on shifting advertising from traditional channels like agents, record labels or institutions like Hollywood and New York’s fashion scene to that new breed of Internet stars. With YouTube, Phan was able to create her own road to stardom one that veered from the established trajectory in the high-fashion arena, where the surest path to success was down the runway of a top designer’s show. In May 2013, ipsy hosted Generation-Beauty, a conference in Los Angeles for beauty bloggers and online beauty content creators.
