20 Years in South Africa
Crabtree & Evelyn’s South African flagship retail store opened in September 1996 at the V&A Waterfront, in Cape Town. In its 20 year history the Brand has opened eight retail stores in the country’s top malls – Sandton City, Cavendish Square, Menlyn Park, La Lucia, Hyde Park, Canal Walk and Design Quarter. The latter includes an exciting Tea Room concept.
A growing portfolio of wholesale clients have included department and chain stores Stuttafords, Edgars, Red Square, @Home and Dis-Chem. An impressive list of independent boutiques, nurseries, pharmacies, delicatessens, barbers, home and gift stores have also stocked our collections over the years. More recently, selected products have graced the pages of a number of online retailers such as Kalahari, Take A Lot, Superbalist, Spree, Rubybox and our own e-commerce site.
The Brand also secured one of the biggest hotel supply contracts of its time in 2003, with a range of Jojoba guest amenities gracing the suites of eleven Sun International hotels in five Southern African countries. Between 2005 and 2012 their five top hotels used Jojoba in all their rooms. C&E South Africa went on to supply La Source to four Hilton Hotels in 2010 and Citron to the newly opened DoubleTree in 2013. Moreover, we supplied the local business and first class lounges of South African Airways for over ten years. The Brand’s sustained growth, popularity and achievements in a relatively small and increasingly competitive market are testament to the dedication and drive of the owner Michèle Higginson. Her passion for the Brand has inspired generations of C&E ambassadors over the past 20 years, and together they have carved an enviable place for Crabtree & Evelyn in South Africa.
Crabtree & Evelyn now has a strong retail presence in more than 65 countries, including over 200 wholly owned branded retail stores. The brand is available through five retail stores in South Africa, an e-commerce website, over 25 Dis-Chem pharmacies and selected boutiques.

Crabtree & Evelyn Aloe Vera range chosen for the South African Airways First Class Lounges in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The SAA Platinum Business Class lounge in the new HB Domestic Terminal follows suit in 2003.
2003
Crabtree & Evelyn store opens in Menlyn Park, Pretoria.
Crabtree & Evelyn Jojoba range chosen for the major suites of eleven Sun International hotels and resorts in Southern Africa.
Launch of the Crabtree & Evelyn store in Hyde Park, Gauteng.
2005
Crabtree & Evelyn chosen as exclusive supplier of amenities and accessories for all Sun International 5-star hotels and resorts in Southern Africa – including The Palace of the Lost City, Zimbali Lodge, The Cascades, The Royal Livingstone and the Table Bay.
2006
Crabtree & Evelyn store opens in Design Quarter, Fourways Gauteng. The Crabtree & Evelyn Tearoom also opens at Design Quarter, only the second C&E Tearoom in the world, and now the only one open (for bookings only).
Crabtree & Evelyn celebrates ten years in South Africa.
2007
Crabtree & Evelyn store opens in La Lucia Mall, Durban.
Crabtree & Evelyn South Africa’s sister company Luxury Guest Solutions (LGS) enters into an agreement with Sysco Guest Supply Europe to represent their brands in Southern Africa – including Crabtree & Evelyn.
2008
Crabtree & Evelyn plans two new stores in Cape Town – reopening at V&A Waterfront [June] and Canal Walk [August].
2011
Luxury Guest Solutions starts to supply Hilton Hotels in South Africa and Namibia with Crabtree & Evelyn La Source.
Crabtree and Evelyn Launches in Mopani Pharmacy, Nelspruit.
2012
Crabtree & Evelyn sold by Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (“KLK”) to Hong Kong based holding company, Khuan Choo International Limited (“KCIL”).
Crabtree & Evelyn Sandton City moves to a new location and re-opens with the new global store design.
Crabtree & Evelyn launches its first online partnership with Style36/36Beauty.
2013
Luxury Guest Solutions starts to supply the newly converted DoubleTree by Hilton in Cape Town with Crabtree & Evelyn Citron, Honey & Coriander.
Crabtree & Evelyn launches on the Rubybox website, after running a successful sampling Campaign.
Crabtree & Evelyn runs a successful Women’s Day promotional offer on the online retailer Citymob (rebranded Superbalist).
