-Gohmert Names Boehner’s Broken Promises

5 Jan 2015 by Michael Patrick Leahy

Two dozen conservative activists, including prominent new media personalities Michelle Malkin and Dana Loesch, joined Judson Phillips of Tea Party Nation and John Hawkins and Tiffany Ruegner of Right Wing News, in signing a letter calling on “Republicans in the House of Representatives to elect someone other than John Boehner as Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

Members of the newly elected House of Representatives will meet in Washington on Tuesday to select a new Speaker of the House.

“In the four years Boehner has been Speaker,” the letter reads, “he has been nothing short of a disaster.”

The signatories have little good to say about Boehner.

“He has insulted conservatives; he’s a poor strategist; his word means nothing; he’s reluctant to fight and he has lost the trust of Republicans across America,” the letter says.

“As bad as things have been over the last four years,” they write, “in the last month they became even worse.”

After the Republican victories in November, “John Boehner surrendered and gave the Democrats almost everything they wanted in the so-called ‘Cromnibus’ bill rather than passing a short-term continuing resolution that would have allowed Republicans to tackle the issues in 2015 after they are in the majority.”

The letter sets forth more than a half a dozen credible alternatives to Boehner.

“A number of names have been floated as possible replacements. These include Marsha Blackburn, Trey Gowdy, Jim Jordan, Raúl Labrador, Louie Gohmert, Jeb Hensarling and even Ted Yoho.”

“Any of them would be an improvement over John Boehner,” the signatories wrote.

Both Yoho and Gohmert have publicly announced they are offering themselves as alternatives to Boehner for Speaker.

“Gohmert’s announcement over the weekend was a major shot in the battle to replace John Boehner as Speaker,” letter organizer Judson Phillips tells Breitbart News.

“The conservative wing of the GOP gets the message,” Phillips said. “People are fed up with John Boehner and Republicans who tell the voters one thing at home and do another in Washington.”

“Louie Gohmert, Dave Brat and some of the others who have said they will not vote for John Boehner understand how angry the base is. They also understand that if we have two more years of John Boehner leading the House Republicans, it will destroy the Republican Party and Republican control of the House,” Phillips concluded.

The rebellious Republicans need 29 votes against Boehner on Tuesday to send the vote for the Speaker in to a second round. ConservativeHQ.com estimates that with seven members publicly opposed to Boehner as of Monday morning, the rebellion needs to add twenty-two members to succeed on Tuesday.

Joint Letter: Conservative Leaders Call on House Republicans to Fire John Boehner

05 Jan, 2015 by John Hawkins

Yesterday, John Hawkins and Tiffiny Ruegner of Right Wing News joined up with Judson Phillips of Tea Party Nation to organize a joint letter to Republicans in Congress. What follows is the text of the letter along with the signatories.

Barack Obama and John Boehner golfing

On January 6th, the House of Representatives will hold its first vote of the new Congress to determine who the Speaker will be.

House Speaker John Boehner is running for reelection.

In the four years Boehner has been Speaker, he has been nothing short of a disaster.

He has insulted conservatives; he’s a poor strategist; his word means nothing; he’s reluctant to fight and he has lost the trust of Republicans across America. A recent poll from Pat Caddell and EMC Research showed that 60% of Republicans want someone new as Speaker of the House.

As bad as things have been over the last four years, in the last month they became even worse.

After the election in November, when America sent a powerful message to Washington, John Boehner surrendered and gave the Democrats almost everything they wanted in the so-called “Cromnibus” bill rather than passing a short-term continuing resolution that would have allowed Republicans to tackle the issues in 2015 after they are in the majority.

Is this the best we can do?

We call upon the Republicans in the House of Representatives to elect someone other than John Boehner as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

A number of names have been floated as possible replacements. These include Marsha Blackburn, Trey Gowdy, Jim Jordan, Raúl Labrador, Louie Gohmert, Jeb Hensarling and even Ted Yoho.

Any of them would be an improvement over John Boehner.

It is time for the Republicans in the House of Representatives to listen to the people they represent, fire John Boehner and choose a Speaker of the House who can prove to the American people that the GOP is capable of leading America into the future.

South Carolina Tea Party Leader Presses State’s Delegation: Vote Against Boehner

5 Jan 2015 by Matthew Boyle

South Carolina Tea Party convention leader Joe Dugan, the head of the Myrtle Beach Tea Party, is putting his state’s GOP House members on notice: he wants them to vote against John Boehner for Speaker on Tuesday.

“I am confident that the astute, South Carolina Congressional delegation is keenly aware of the voter mandate they received in November,” Dugan said in an email to Breitbart News. “SC citizens are freedom loving patriotic Americans, who are fed up with their rights being compromised and the enslavement by regulation of bigger and bigger government. They oppose in overwhelming numbers, Amnesty for illegal aliens, Obamacare, and open borders that threaten their safety and security. In South Carolina we are proud of our Congressmen and watch their backs because of the way they have stood by us and our Constitution, since 2010.”

Dugan said South Carolinians, some of the most conservative voters in America, will be let down should any member of the state delegation vote for Boehner.

“We will be more than disappointed, should they vote to keep John Boehner on as Speaker, guaranteeing us more of the same creeping socialism,” Dugan said. “The people voted for principled, bold new leadership and I fully expect that is what we will get. Congressman Louie Gohmert would be a fantastic choice and that would reassure voters that they are being heard!”

The most likely South Carolina member to vote against Boehner would be Rep. Jeff Duncan, though he hasn’t committed one way or the other. His office hasn’t responded to multiple requests for comment from Breitbart News. Duncan is one of the most vocal conservatives in the House, and frequently leads efforts to oppose Boehner, even though he supported Boehner for Speaker in the last Congress.

Another conservative member from South Carolina is Rep. Mick Mulvaney. He actually voted against Boehner last time, but hasn’t made clear either way yet whether he’ll vote for Boehner or one of the alternative Speaker candidates, Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) and Ted Yoho (R-FL). Mulvaney’s office also hasn’t responded to requests for comment from Breitbart News.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), despite being pushed for Speaker by conservative radio host Sean Hannity, has said through his office that he “is not interested in any leadership positions.” Gowdy actually nominated Boehner for re-election in a closed-door conference meeting back in November—but that was before the cromnibus bill.

Boehner profits from ObamaCare stocks

Jan 5, 2015 by Jerome R. Corsi

NEW YORK – Since the passage of Obamacare, House Speaker John Boehner has been dogged by critics pointing out his investment portfolio has benefited from owning insurance and medical company stocks that have profited from the legislation.

An analysis of Boehner’s current investment holdings includes a number of stocks benefiting from Obamacare in a total portfolio estimated at between $3.5 and $5 million in current market value.

Among Boehner’s current holdings are:

Boehner’s Obamacare-related investments trace back to 2009, when the Obama administration was pushing the Affordable Health Care Act through Congress.

Peter Schweizer, in his 2011 book on Washington corruption, “Throw Them All Out: How Politicians and Their Friends Get Rich Off Insider Stock Tips, Land Deals, and Cronyism that Would Send the Rest of Us to Prison,” noted on page 20: “Congressman John Boehner, who was leading the opposition to Obamacare in the House of Representatives, may have been fighting John Kerry on policy matters, but he was entirely allied with him when it came to investment decisions.”

Schweizer continued:

On December 10, 2008, Boehner bought numerous health insurance company stocks, including tens of thousands of dollars in Cardinal Health, Cigna, and Wellpoint. On the same day, Boehner purchased shares in the Big Pharm companies Amgen, Johnson & Johnson, Forest Labs, Covidien, and Pfizer. He also bought shares in CareFusion, which provides systems for countering infections. Just days later, on December 15, the Washington Post declared that the ‘public option’ was officially dead.

Schweitzer drew a causal link, noting that Boehner’s heavy investment in Obamacare stocks meant his political opposition to the legislation was undermined by his personal interest.

Schweizer concluded:

Health insurers breathed a sigh of relief. So too did pharmaceutical companies, who feared that a government health insurance program would lead to price controls. When Boehner bought Wellpoint stock on December 10, the price was about $56 a share. Within a month it was trading at $66 a share. Cardinal Health was up approximately 10 percent by the time President Obama signed the health care bill. In early 2010, Boehner bought yet more shares in Cardinal Health and Pfizer, before President Obama signed the health care bill.

Boehner has continued to profit from health-industry investments tracing back to 2009: Wellpoint Inc, which he bought at $56 a share, is now trading at $124.37. Cardinal Health, which he bought when it was trading at approximately $30 a share in 2011, is now trading at $80.44; and Pfizer which was trading at under $20 a share in 2010, is now at $31.06.

WND’s Joseph Farah has begun the grass-roots “Don’t Be Yellow: Dump Boehner Now!” campaign, which has already sent some 560,000 letters to House Republicans attempting to mobilize the palace coup.

In addition to the health-care stocks, Boehner’s investment portfolio includes several large insurance companies, including shares in John Hancock (bonds and notes), Travelers (stock), Prudential Financial (bonds and notes), Allstate (stock), AFLAC (bonds and notes) and MetLife (bonds and notes).

After public uproar over members of Congress being allowed to buy and sell investments based on insider information – a violation that could constitute criminal activity if done by members of the public – Congress passed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, which was signed into law by President Obama April 4, 2012.

Quietly, Congress passed and President Obama signed in April 2013 a new bill that indefinitely suspended the filing requirements of the STOCK Act for 28,000 executive-branch employees. The exemptions included senior executive service members working on the staff for members of the House and Senate. The bill opened up a back door to congressional staffers to engage once again in investment activities that for public investors would be grounds for possible criminal violations.

Prior to the passage of the STOCK Act, members of the House and Senate were exempt from SEC regulations on insider trading, allowing them to trade freely on privileged information obtained while conducting their official congressional activities.

Boehner has consistently maintained his investments are held in a blind trust and that he does not personally make investment decisions in his own investment portfolio. But few experienced congressional critics believe Boehner and other members of Congress are unaware of their investment holdings, because public disclosure requirements demand yearly filings of all investments.

ACTION ALERT: GOHMERT FOR SPEAKER @replouiegohmert

A ray of hope in Washington: Representative Louie Gohmert is challenging RINO John Boehner for Speaker of the House. Boehner and the Republican establishment have let down conservatives again and again and again, giving in to the Obama Administration’s strong-arming and letting the left run roughshod over our Constitutional freedoms, national security, and economic strength.

Louie Gohmert won’t allow any of that to happen for one minute longer. In a Congress full of lemmings and self-serving hacks, he is a titan — one of the few Representatives who know the truth about the jihad terror threat and isn’t afraid to enunciate it. He has challenged Obama henchmen including Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano and Robert Mueller on their evasions and half-truths. He doesn’t back down and start bawling like Boehner — he stands his ground and tells the truth.

For those who have long wondered if there was any testicular fortitude left in the GOP, wonder no more.

What a wonderful development for those of us deeply committed to individual rights, liberty and national security.

The Republican majority in the House needs Louie Gohmert. The American people need Louie Gohmert. If you’re in a Republican district, contact your Representative now and tell him or her that you expect a vote for Gohmert — and will consider a vote for Boehner to be yet another betrayal of the American people. Do it now.

Gohmert Names Boehner’s Broken Promises

5 Jan 2015 by Sarah Rumpf

In an exclusive interview with Breitbart Texas, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) shared more details about his decision to challenge Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) for the Speakership, citing a long list of broken promises and his worries about a third party splitting the conservative vote as inspiring his determination to oust Boehner.

As Breitbart Texas reported earlier, Gohmert announced on Fox & Friends early Sunday morning that he would be challenging Boehner for Speaker, in a vote that will take place this Tuesday, January 6th. Gohmert reemphasized what he said this morning, that what had inspired him to take this step was conversations he had had with other Members. He kept hearing, repeatedly, that his fellow Republicans were frustrated with Boehner but did not see anyone stepping forward to run. Without an alternative, they did not believe there was a realistic way to remove Boehner. Now Gohmert has stepped forward, as well as Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Florida), a veterinarian from Gainesville who is beginning his second term in office this month. Gohmert believed that there “may be more” who step forward, but did not name any specific names.

He was insistent that this effort was not about any one person. In fact, he made numerous comments indicating that he cares less if he gets the job or someone else, as long as Boehner is removed. “It should be clear, this isn’t about a person, it’s about keeping the status quo or changing,” said Gohmert. “This is not about me, or Ted Yoho, or anyone else.”

On the issue of “anyone but Boehner,” Gohmert mentioned that some have voiced concerns that a split in the Republican votes could lead to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi being able to get enough votes from a presumably unified Democrat coalition that she could be reelected Speaker. As Breitbart Texas reported, House rules allow the Republicans to control the procedure, and as long as the Republicans vote for a living American adult for Speaker, they will be able to continue the voting process until they agree on a Speaker. The only way the Republicans would lose that power is if Republicans turn in ballots marked “present,” and not a person’s name.

To clarify one issue: while it is true that technically the Speaker does not have to be a current or even former Member of Congress, that has not happened and considering the uneasiness Members have voiced about replacing the Speaker with someone less experienced, the likelihood a majority of House Republicans would back someone outside their ranks is considered extraordinarily unlikely.

Gohmert described the “tremendous amount of encouragement from around the country” that he had received since making his announcement. The Congressman has long had a positive relationship with conservative grassroots activists, and launched his own PAC, GOH Conservative PAC, last year at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). In contrast to many other PACs established by members of Congress, Gohmert has not expressed any presidential ambitions. According to John LaRosa of Four Tier Strategies, one of the consultants who helped Gohmert launch the PAC, “the mission of Congressman Gohmert’s GOH Conservative PAC is to recruit, vet and support solid conservative candidates across the country. During the 2014 cycle, he was able to help several great candidates (including one of my personal favorites, Dan Bongino), and our goal is to raise much more money in 2015 so he can support many more candidates in the 2016 cycle.”

One intriguing wrinkle to the mention of Dan Bongino, who came tantalizingly close to winning a Congressional race in Maryland, is that he was unable to get significant support from the NRCC or other official party fundraising operations. A consultant who worked on Republican congressional campaigns last election cycle but did not want to be named told Breitbart Texas that Bongino could not get financial support because it was believed that he would be unlikely to support Boehner or his designated successor.

Gohmert told Breitbart Texas that he had also talked to several other House Republicans in the past few hours. A number were cautiously optimistic, but were “struggling” with their decisions, especially those that held chairmanships or hoped for one. Gohmert acknowledged that it would be a “bold move” for them to step forward and vote against Boehner, but that he believed that the frustration levels were high enough and the time was right for this to happen.

As Gohmert said in his Fox & Friends interview, a major driving force behind his efforts to oust Boehner are the “broken promises” from the Speaker, and he elaborated more on these issues with Breitbart Texas. According to Gohmert, these broken promises include:

– Promising to “fight tooth and nail” against Obama’s executive amnesty orders, but then allowing the CRomnibus bill to proceed forward with it still being funded;

– Promising every debt ceiling increase would be paired with a spending cut, but that has not happened;

– Promising Members would have time to properly read bills, then allowing only a three day period, which in reality was actually only two days;

– Promising a regular order of bills through committees, but bills keep coming to the floor without having followed that process;

– Promising that sequestrations would not happen, but then later declaring that they were necessary;

– Promising he would only serve one term as Speaker when he first ran; and

– Promising to have more transparent and open Speakership than Pelosi, who would not allow amendments, but instead running what Gohmert dubbed “the most closed Speakership in the history of the country.”

Regarding Boehner’s broken promise to only serve one term, Gohmert was especially frustrated. “It’s become clear he’s not going to leave the Speakership until he’s forced out.” Regarding Breitbart Texas‘ report that Boehner had wanted and expected Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) to succeed him as Speaker until Cantor lost his primary, Gohmert neither confirmed nor denied that he had heard that plan, simply saying that “there are all kinds of rumors,” which may or may not be true, but he was just focused on making sure that Boehner did get out now.

“We need leadership we can trust, and show the American people that we got their message and can change … it’s time we started doing what we promised when we got the majority [in the House in 2010],” Gohmert told Breitbart Texas, but Boehner’s many broken promises had destroyed that trust. Gohmert has been hearing increasing chatter from conservative activists around the country about third parties. “We need to pull this party together, but, you know, the broken promises in 2012 caused millions of Republicans and Independents to stay home,” said Gohmert.

Many of the “most ardent Independents” are conservatives, he continued, but are not registered Republicans. If millions of them again stay home in 2016, it will be a “disaster” for America. “We’ve got to try to salvage things,” said Gohmert, “People all across America are demanding change,” and the threat of a third party “is tremendous…if we don’t recognize that, we’re going to destroy our chances in 2016.”

In response to some other Congressional Republicans’ worries that a divisive fight over the Speaker’s race could damage the GOP’s chances in 2016, Gohmert rejected that argument outright. “We saw what happens when you have a nasty fight,” said Gohmert, citing the 2008 Democratic primary fight between Obama and Hillary Clinton. “Nothing could have been nastier, but after it was settled…then you win the White House.” In Gohmert’s view, this battle for the Speakership will be a positive development for the GOP: “We will actually bring more supporters to the Republican party when they see that we are really trying to be honest and clean things up, and have people in the position of leaders.”

When asked about the upcoming Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill, Gohmert was openly skeptical that any language in that bill would be able to successfully block Obama’s executive amnesty action. “It’s not a good strategy,” he said directly, because Obama can “easily veto” that bill, and then blame Republicans for a wide open border without Border Patrol because Republicans would not fund them.

“You should never take a hostage that the other side wants you to shoot,” said Gohmert, arguing that the President prefers lowered border security and enforcement, so this particular threat would lack teeth.

Breitbart Texas asked Gohmert what, then, he believes will be the best strategy for actually blocking funding for Obama’s executive amnesty, if there is one. Gohmert replied that, “You won’t block it until it’s something that the President deeply cares about,” and nothing less could possibly work. “We’re going to have to decide what we want to take hostage,” he added, “use whatever it takes,” and then immediately work on getting appropriations bills passed, which can happen now that Republicans have a majority in the Senate as well, and absolutely no more continuing resolutions.

If Boehner is re-elected Speaker, Gohmert was pessimistic about whether he would be able to make any positive changes in his leadership style or legislating strategy, as some have hoped. “We’ll see amnesty unstopped, and Obamacare get bigger and be unstopped, and inadequate oversight of the executive branch,” he gloomily predicted. According to Gohmert, two years ago, Boehner had been “within hours” of losing the Speakership. There had been 21 Members “who had committed in writing” to vote for someone else as of the evening before the vote. By the morning of the vote, that number had shrunk to 19, and Boehner’s people had just barely persuaded enough of them to change their votes. Gohmert had hoped that that close call would have changed Boehner’s behavior, but it did not. “I don’t expect a tough race this time to change that either,” he said. “In fact, [if he wins] it will be a rubber stamp for business as usual.”
