(NaturalNews) The African nation of Liberia was founded, in part, by freed American slaves, but now, nearly 200 years later, the country is in danger of becoming overrun by Ebola, and its president is seeking dictatorial powers.
According to Voice of America (VOA), President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has petitioned the national legislature to extend to her additional emergency powers in the name of preventing the further spread of the deadly virus.
Currently, the country is already under a state of emergency, as well as a curfew, VOA reported, adding:
In a letter to the Plenary of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Sirleaf asked for powers to amend seven different articles under the constitution, including freedom of movement, speech, religion, confiscation of private property, and elections.
‘I will vote against it’
Acarous Gray, a member of the House of Representatives from Congress for Democratic Change, an opposition party, has announced he will vote “no” on Sirleaf’s request for new authoritarian powers. He said he will do so because he does not want to see a return to a military-style dictatorship for Liberia, outbreak or not.
“In my view, this is dangerous, and it reminds us of the days when the dictators govern Liberia,” he said, as reported by VOA. “While it is true that we have a state of emergency, the Liberian Constitution under Article 87 is very clear that during the state of emergency no provision of the constitution can be suspended. So, we cannot provide an absolute authority of such to the President that will be draconian. I will publicly advocate against it, and I will vote against it.”
He went on to say that Sirleaf has not yet made much of a dent in reducing the impact of the virus on the country, despite the fact that she has placed Liberia under a curfew and state of emergency.
“Authority under the state of emergency has been given to the President as [far] back as August 7 of this year. But what has the president done with that authority?” Gray said.
In a separate report, International Business Times (IBT) reported that Sirleaf has canceled nationwide Senate elections that were forthcoming in just a few days — again, citing concerns that the election commission could not operate polling stations in a safe environment because of the Ebola crisis.
Agence France-Presse further reported that officials believed that the elections, which were expected to draw about 3 million voters, would have unnecessarily endangered lives and therefore should not be carried out.
‘Do we want chaos?’
IBT noted:
Liberia was slated to vote in half of its 30-member upper chamber. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf exercised her authority to declare a state of emergency and suspended “any and all rights ordinarily exercised, enjoyed and guaranteed to citizens.”
“[The government] has been unable to undertake several of the processes that are prerequisites to conducting the pending 2014 Senatorial elections, including the deployment of staff in the field to conduct civil/voter education, the recruitment and deployment of the required polling staff at polling centers, [and] the importation of basic, essential and sensitive electoral materials due to the suspension of flights to Liberia,” the president said in a statement.
The elections were to be held the second week in October, as per the Liberian constitution.
Prior to the cancellation, Gray insisted that any decision to postpone or change election dates should be made through a consultative process involving all political parties in the country as well as each of the three branches of government.
“The National Elections Commission has written to both houses of the legislative branch of government to find a way out. But to provide the single authority to the president to make the decision on when to have elections is tantamount to chaos,” he said, according to VOA.
“Do we want chaos in Liberia? The manner in which the president is proceeding is dangerous. And I want to be very clear that we will not allow a military junta to govern our country under a constitutional arrangement,” Gray added.

U.S. Marines run massive drill to prepare for Ebola pandemic spreading across America

(NaturalNews) A Marine Corps base held a full-scale pandemic outbreak drill within the past week, in which local health officials and U.S. Marine and Navy personnel responded to a mock “smallpox outbreak” that occurred at the installation.
JDNews.com, based in Jacksonville, North Carolina, quoted Lt. Joseph Kotora, public health emergency officer for Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune as saying that the drill, called “Exercise Vigilant Response,” was the first of its kind at the legendary Marine Corps recruit training base.
“The drills are usually conducted annually or semi-annually,” Kotora told local press. “A drill this size has never been conducted, so this is the largest pandemic exercise to my knowledge.”
Though military exercises are planned well in advance, the time of this particular drill has some questioning whether it has anything at all to do with the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Though many Americans are tired of reading and hearing about the disease, it became much more of an issue after Thomas Eric Duncan, a West African national, brought the disease to Dallas late last month. Duncan has since died of his infection, but local, state and federal health officials are continuing to monitor dozens of people whom Duncan may have come in contact with while contagious.
One addition to the Camp Lejeune exercise: Officials opted to including the administration of vaccines during the drill so that it would more accurately reflect an outbreak situation in which medical personnel would be asked to screen patients and give inoculations.
‘We are trying to identify some areas where we can improve’
JDNews.com further reported:
During the exercise, Marines from various squadrons aboard the station formed single file lines and filled out forms before getting their body temperatures taken by Navy corpsmen. From there, each Marine enters the building also known as the Point of Dispersion, or POD, where flu shots were given out.
Naval medical personnel had about 1,200 flu shots on hand to administer to active-duty sailors and Marines based at New River. Kotora added that medical personnel had already administered about 700 vaccines to Marines during the first few hours of the exercise.
“This is a simulated exercise designed to test our capabilities and respond to a pandemic or biological threat,” he said. “We’re trying to identify some areas where we can improve and we’re also trying to foster some confidence in the population that we serve… that we can respond effectively to a mass terror or a weapon of mass destruction incident.”
JFK Airport in NYC to begin special screenings
There have been other developments regarding readiness in the United States following Ebola’s arrival.
In New York City, authorities have implemented stricter new rules at airports regarding the screening of passengers. Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that new rules for hospitals were also implemented, even while city officials are stressing to the public there is little to be concerned about:
New York’s John F. Kennedy International will become the first airport in the United States to start new screening measures… aimed at halting the disease in its tracks should more cases emerge.
Specifically, travelers from the West African nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea — the three hardest-hit nations — will undergo screening by Customs and Border Protection agents who will be checking for any signs of illness in general, but especially those related to Ebola. U.S. Customs officials will be on alert particularly for high fevers, and travelers from the affected countries will be screened in the U.S. even if they were screened when they departed.
Of the more than 50 million people who travel through JFK each year, only a small number — perhaps only a few dozen a -day – are estimated to come from the affected countries, AFP reported.

Ultraviolet light robot kills Ebola in two minutes; why doesn’t every hospital have one of these?

(NaturalNews) While vaccine makers and drug companies are rushing to bring medical interventions to the market that might address the Ebola pandemic, there’s already a technology available right now that can kill Ebola in just two minutes in hospitals, quarantine centers, commercial offices and even public schools.

NEW YORK – An interactive map plotting the airline flights originating in Monrovia, Liberia, makes clear why international health officials are concerned Europe is the next place where the Ebola virus could spread.
Already, one case of Ebola has been confirmed in Spain, and the Independent newspaper in the United Kingdom is reporting scientific analysis concluding there is a 75 percent chance Ebola will hit France by Oct. 24 and a 50 percent chance it will hit Britain by the end of the month..
The interactive air-travel map shows Europe is the most common transit point for international travelers traveling from Liberia to the U.S.
Flights from Monrovia, Liberia, easily connect with international flights to Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Bologna, Rome and London.
Flights from Brussels regularly connect to New York’s JFK, Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago in the United States along with destinations such as Tel-Aviv, Montreal, Toronto and New Delhi.
How easy is it for someone from Liberia that is already infected with Ebola to leave the country by air?
As demonstrated by the case of Thomas Eric Duncan – the Liberian infected with Ebola who died this week in a Dallas hospital – the authorities in Monrovia screening departing passengers have no way to know if someone claiming to have had no contact with Ebola-infected individuals is lying.
Furthermore, since the disease can take up to 21 days to incubate before symptoms manifest, a person infected with Ebola could easily pass through security in Monrovia undetected.
How easy is it to depart from Monrovia to travel internationally?
Three flights a day depart Monrovia for Casablanca, the main connecting airport for European flights.
One flight each day flies non-stop from Monrovia to Brussels.
As the interactive map demonstrates, there are direct flights connecting Casablanca with New York’s JFK International Airport, just as there are flights from Dakar, Senegal, to Dulles International in Washington, D.C., as well as to JFK.
As WND reported Oct. 2, there are hundreds of ways to fly from Liberia to the United States and connect to every airport in the country.
A spreadsheet listing connecting flights from Monrovia through Casablanca shows more than 100 destinations, including cities in Africa, the Middle East, South America, Russia, Europe and the United States.
Both the United Nations’ World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta continue to insist a restriction on air travel from West Africa would only increase the spread of the disease. The agencies contend it would make it more difficult for international health authorities to get qualified medical personnel and supplies to the affected nations.
WND has also reported an international team of scientists argued a reduction in airline travel of as much as 80 percent would only delay the international spread of Ebola by three to four weeks at most.

Americans riveted by Ebola
Poll shows virus concerns top all other issues

WASHINGTON – In his first remarks on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, President Obama assured the American people the “chances of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States are extremely low.”
The American people do not seem reassured, judging by the results of a Pew poll that found more Americans are paying close attention to the Ebola outbreak than any other issue.
Perhaps that is because, when he made those remarks on Sept. 16., the president also called it “unlikely” that someone with Ebola would “reach our shores,” and that the U.S was taking precautions so that “someone with the virus doesn’t get on a plane for the United States.”
As the editorial board of the Los Angeles Times pointed out, “It was only a matter of weeks before Obama’s words proved inaccurate.”
On Wednesday, Thomas Eric Duncan became the first person to die of Ebola in the U.S., having arrived in Dallas from Liberia on Sept. 20.
The Times also opined, “Had the public realized what those precautions consisted of — merely checking travelers’ temperatures … and asking them whether they had been in close contact with Ebola patients — many Americans probably would have disagreed with the president.”
The public seems fully focused on the Ebola threat now.
According to a Pew Poll released this week, Americans are paying the most attention to these stories:
36 percent: Ebola outbreak
31 percent: U.S. airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria
21 percent: Secret Service problems/director resignations
15 percent: 2014 midterm elections
7 percent: Hong Kong protests
Americans are following the Ebola outbreak more closely than the airstrikes against ISIS, even though the terrorist army is advancing in both Syria and Iraq despite the U.S. attacks.
The Ebola issue also eclipses the Secret Service scandal, despite revelations this week the White House may have engaged in a cover-up.
And, more than twice as many Americans are focused on Ebola than the midterm elections in a few weeks that could swing control of the Senate back to Republicans.
Perhaps illustrating Americans’ concern with Ebola was what happened when a man on an airplane who was coughing and wheezing joked he had Ebola.
CNN reported passengers reacted with “astonishment, anger and fear.”
The man who reportedly said “I have Ebola. You’re all screwed,” was escorted off U.S. Airways Flight 845 by four men in blue hazmat suits after the plane landed in the Dominican Republic.
The passenger complained he had been kidding, but he was taken seriously by a flight attendant who called him “an idiot.”
One passenger said, “That’s not something you joke about.”
Another said, “Don’t touch this guy,” as passengers covered their faces and moved away from him.
Concern is running high at airports all across America.
The Centers for Disease Control, a county fire department and a health district all responded to an Ebola scare at McCarran airport in Las Vegas on Friday.
A Las Vegas station reported an airplane was held in quarantine on the tarmac for more than an hour after arriving from New York due to fears about a vomiting passenger who had recently traveled to Africa.
Passengers were able to de-plane after Delta Airlines finally affirmed it was not a “communicable disease” event.
Also on Friday, Hazmat crews descended upon a plane in Birmingham, Alabama, after the United flight arrived from Chicago with a vomiting passenger.
That person was traveling from Jordan, not Africa, but fears were sufficient enough to detain all 40 passengers until the risk of Ebola had been eliminated.
On Thursday, cabin-cleaning crews at New York’s LaGuardia airport went on a 24-hour strike, complaining they were not properly trained or equipped to treat planes from Ebola stricken areas.
And, perhaps in a sign of things to come, an Ebola scare struck a hospital in North Carolina on Thursday after a man who had recently traveled to Africa merely showed up with a fever.
The Appalachian Regional Healthcare System in Boone implemented special Ebola protocols until it was determined there was not a threat to the community.
