Barack Obama has convinced me. I am newly converted. I have seen the light. War is not the answer – particularly if Barack Obama is Commander-In-Chief. He is the Modern Western analog to an old English Monarch. He is America’s answer to Ethelred The Unready. Unlike King Ethelred, he has no excuse for being poorly advised. He chose his own team of experts. Chuck Hagel, Hillary Clinton, John F. Kerry and Valerie Jarret are all his own personal hires. His degrees are from Columbia and Harvard. There is no acceptable reason for his failure to prepare for the crisis occurring now in The Middle East with ISIS.
If this man leads our armed forces; we should not engage our soldiers, sailors, airmen or marines in any combat operation unless the United States is directly attacked. Otherwise, it would be utter moral malpractice to place the lives of our military personnel in the hands of anyone so personally unwilling to do what is necessary to lead America into the future.
We ultimately will be drawn into a war against ISIS. They will feel emboldened to attack us. Paticularly when we are ruled by a man who is too foolish to admit that The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has much of anything to do with Islam. The hope here in my heart is that two years will pass before they are so brave and somebody with a decent set of ethics and morals will reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to lead us to war against the sick and degenerate infidels who behead, mutilate and crucify their victims on behalf of ISIS. President Obama’s recent speech on his strategy to combat ISIS is prima-face evidence that he has no business being in charge of any such conflict. A doppelganger capable of writing plain English hijacked David Frum’s column at The Atlantic and properly critiqued President Obama’s Night-Before-The-Paper-Was-Due Address below.
Barack Obama’s address Wednesday on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was surprisingly terrible: a disorganized mess, insincere and unconvincing.
Frum replaces Obama’s Doublespeak answers to simple, obvious questions with plain translations. Here is a flavor of just how completely banal Mr. Frum found The Commander-In-Chief’s latest GHG emission of a speech for the masses.
Q: Why are we fighting ISIS? Is the group a threat to the United States or American allies?… A: No, not really….. Q: Do we have a plan to defeat ISIS? A: Again, no, not really…..The question before the nation is, “What is the benefit of this war to America and to Americans?” That was the question the speech left unanswered.
We can sum this up as follows: David Frum, famous for his NeoCon bellicosity; has listened to our President.* He has concluded from the verbal effluvium that President Obama is proposing to introduce lethal force against a foe he does not personally believe can do us or our allies any harm. He has no plan on how to manage said lethality once he pops open the can of Whoop-A–. Having popped a can on a bunch of people unable to harm the US or its allies; he is incapable of naming a single benefit that this course of action will accrue to the American people. If this is what the War-Monger Caucus thinks of the latest from His Most Grandiloquent Emperor of The Sand Trap then where is Code Pink when they’d be any more useful to the commonweal than a case of hemorrhoids? Why aren’t Howard Dean and Cindy Sheehan singing karaoke duets of “Give Peace A Chance” by John Lennon?** Where is the mighty voice of internet Progressivism? That one, at least, we can answer.
I can envision no plausible scenario in which this country stops its endless projection of military force. Not in my lifetime. I suppose I hope only that people in the media will someday be honest and say: we are bent on war, and our media is bent on war, and there is no such thing as an anti-war voice in our politics or media, and we will go to war again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again.

It may not be quite that bad. Our President made that whole thing up off the cuff. It was a strategy, but I’m not sure it was directed at ISIS as much as it was directed at five toss-up Senate races for seats currently held by Democrats. Get past this election, and he’ll be talking off the other cuff. He’ll have more flexibility. He’ll be back at the links ignoring the world outside of fundraising and celebrity-schmoozing. That would suit me just fine. I’m totally against this war. Not because ISIS isn’t as sick as a town with an Ebola outbreak. I simply see our armed forces as having no path to victory under the failed and unconcerned leadership of President Barack Obama. Until this failed and feckless president is out of office, I’m now staunchly anti-war unless The United States of America is directly attacked.

From the legal execution of converts to the the institutionalized abuse of women, from the radical countries to the Disney-friendly kingdoms, Crowder outlines exactly why the Islamic State is Islamic, and it is, in fact, many states.
The progressives and liberals in America have long been in a state of severe cognitive dissonance about the nature of the threat the world faces. But the words of those who would threaten are plain, and the laws that enable them are codified, and the practices that exemplify them are plentiful, and religion that started it all has a name. And it has a state. And we are at war with that state.

As we are on the cusp of watching helplessly as Islamic extremists carve a caliphate out of Iraq and Syria we need to ask how did we get in this mess. Though we know we left Iraq precipitously because of Obama’s political calculations we’re only now finding out that the administration was aware the situation was unraveling and lied about it.
In an Ask Me Anything forum of Reddit on September 10, New York Times Baghdad Bureau Chief Tim Arango gave an amazingly candid interview:
Arango elaborated on his interactions with Tony Blinken on NPR’s radio program “Fresh Air”:
And there was one bizarre example where – I felt was bizarre – it was a kind of a – not even a huge story I did. But it was a story about the rising levels of violence and the sourcing was, you know, obviously the attacks that are going on. But there was actually United Nations data showing that civilian casualties were up fairly substantially. And the pushback was such that Tony Blinken, who was, you know, Biden’s national security advisor – and I believe he’s now a White House staff on the Obama side – and he wrote a letter to the editor. And he wrote me emails and saying – and his argument came down to that civilian casualties should not be the metric to judge the level of violence in Iraq. They had some other obscure metric to do this.
And so he was trying to claim that Iraq’s violence was at historic lows.
And that always stuck with me because it was sort of – it was just this very stark example of them trying to obfuscate the truth and what was really going on. And they just wanted to move on from Iraq. And so the lengths that they would go to sort of obfuscate the truth was sort of breathtaking in some instances.
What we are looking at is not a deus ex machina, it isn’t a case of crap just happening, this is a case of an American administration deliberately creating the conditions for an Islamic extremist state and then allowing it to develop for no greater reason than to be able to say they got out if Iraq.
There are two salient facts to keep in mind as this alleged attack on ISIS gathers momentum… or not:
1. When we left Iraq in 2011, it was on the upswing. There were problems but those problems were exacerbated by the administrations monomaniacal insistence on leaving regardless of cost.
2. The administration has know the situation has been deteriorating for three years and rather than take action they not only elected to ignore it, they elected to affirmatively lie about it.

ISIS Has over 40 Cells in Lebanon

Over 40 undercover ISIS cells now exist in Lebanon, according to the Daily Star in Lebanon. A Lebanese security organization asserts that each of the cells includes three or four members who come from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, or the Palestinian Arab areas.
The members have apparently been trained in the Syrian areas of Aleppo and Deir al-Zor as well as Lebanon’s West Bekaa, Iqlim al-Kharroub, Akkar, and Naameh by soldiers who left the Syrian Army or came from Lebanon or the Palestinian Arab areas.
Some other causes for concern are that the members obtained encrypted digital communication devices, pistols with silencers, and fake university identification. They have been told to wear normal everyday clothes and go to nightclubs and cafes.
One rumor is that the cells might assassinate a Sunni leadership figure, precipitating calls that a rival party planned the execution. Recent fights between ISIS and the Nusra Front on one side and the Army on the other triggered the kidnapping of over 30 security personnel. Thus a suicide attack or car bomb would catalyze a plunge in security. 22 soldiers and policemen are still in captivity; two soldiers have already been beheaded by ISIS.
On Thursday, the army Thursday exploded a car with 100 kilograms of explosives near Arsal.
It isn’t just ISIS that is of grave concern; the security group said it had information that the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Abdullah Azzam Brigades was trying to use two suicide bombers on motorcycles to attack the Beirut embassy of an eastern European country.
Lebanese government institutions were working on signing security collaboration protocols with Western and Arab countries. Those agreements would allow all sides to share information acquired relating to ISIS.
A regional conference to address the ISIS crisis was held in Jeddah; Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil arrived there on Thursday.

Obama’s ISIS War Is Not Only Illegal, It Makes George W. Bush Look Like A Constitutional Scholar

Rudderless and without a compass, the American ship of state continues to drift, guns blazing.

I have spent the past several days outlining my deep concerns about the “ISIS crisis” and Obama’s willingness to employ extreme propaganda in order to once again embark on another poorly thought out military campaign here and here. What I have also come to realize is that his latest war plan is brazenly illegal and unconstitutional.
While critics have been questioning the legality of U.S. military campaigns consistently since the end of World War II, one trend has become increasingly clear. With each new President and each new war, we have witnessed those who hold the office act more and more like dictators, and less and less like constitutional executives.
One very important, and up until recently, overlooked point about Obama’s latest “war on ISIS” is that this is not at all just more of the same. This crosses yet another very important line of shadiness, and if we as as American public allow him to do so, we will suffer grave long-term consequences to our economic future as well as our liberties. This is very serious stuff.
No one has outlined this point better than Bruce Ackerman, a professor of law and political science at Yale, in yesterday’s New York Times op-ed: Obama’s Betrayal of the Constitution. He writes:
BERLIN — PRESIDENT OBAMA’s declaration of war against the terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria marks a decisive break in the American constitutional tradition. Nothing attempted by his predecessor, George W. Bush, remotely compares in imperial hubris.
Mr. Bush gained explicit congressional consent for his invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. In contrast, the Obama administration has not even published a legal opinion attempting to justify the president’s assertion of unilateral war-making authority. This is because no serious opinion can be written.
This became clear when White House officials briefed reporters before Mr. Obama’s speech to the nation on Wednesday evening. They said a war against ISIS was justified by Congress’s authorization of force against Al Qaeda after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and that no new approval was needed.
But the 2001 authorization for the use of military force does not apply here. That resolution — scaled back from what Mr. Bush initially wanted — extended only to nations and organizations that “planned, authorized, committed or aided” the 9/11 attacks.
Not only was ISIS created long after 2001, but Al Qaeda publicly disavowed it earlier this year. It is Al Qaeda’s competitor, not its affiliate.
Mr. Obama may rightly be frustrated by gridlock in Washington, but his assault on the rule of law is a devastating setback for our constitutional order. His refusal even to ask the Justice Department to provide a formal legal pretext for the war on ISIS is astonishing.
Senators and representatives aren’t eager to step up to the plate in October when, however they decide, their votes will alienate some constituents in November’s midterm elections. They would prefer to let the president plunge ahead and blame him later if things go wrong. But this is precisely why the War Powers Resolution sets up its 60-day deadline: It rightly insists that unless Congress is willing to stand up and be counted, the war is not worth fighting in the name of the American people.
But for now the president seems grimly determined to practice what Mr. Bush’s lawyers only preached. He is acting on the proposition that the president, in his capacity as commander in chief, has unilateral authority to declare war.
In taking this step, Mr. Obama is not only betraying the electoral majorities who twice voted him into office on his promise to end Bush-era abuses of executive authority. He is also betraying the Constitution he swore to uphold.
Think about this for a second. Barack Obama is using the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), which allowed for military action against “nations and organizations that planned, authorized, committed or aided the 9/11 attacks.” ISIS wasn’t even a twinkle in Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s eye back in September 2001. Even more stunning, ISIS and al-Qaeda more closely resemble enemies than allies. Yet this doesn’t seem to affect Nobel Peace Prize winning Barry Obama’s war planning. You can’t get much more insane and Orwellian than that.
Who cares right? This won’t ever affect you. So what if some bombs fall on innocent Arab civilians? Wrong.
One of the most terrifying aspects of this whole war push if Obama is able to pull it off, is that the reasoning (or lack thereof) could ultimately be applied to the detention of U.S. citizens indefinitely without a trial.
Yes, what I am referring to is the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, which allows for the indefinite detention of American citizens without a trial. I covered this frequently several years ago when Chris Hedges and others were suing the Obama Administration regarding the constitutionality of this law. In fact, one of my most popular posts ever was, NDAA: The Most Important Lawsuit in American History that No One is Talking About.
One of the ways in which the U.S. government has defended the NDAA is by saying it can only be used against “a person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners.” Glenn Greenwald noted in Salon in his, Three Myths About the Detention Bill, that:
Section 1021 of the NDAA governs, as its title says, “Authority of the Armed Forces to Detain Covered Persons Pursuant to the AUMF.” The first provision — section (a) — explicitly “affirms that the authority of the President” under the AUMF ”includes the authority for the Armed Forces of the United States to detain covered persons.” The next section, (b), defines “covered persons” — i.e., those who can be detained by the U.S. military — as “a person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners.”
Notice that the above says “pursuant to the AUMF,” which is the exact law the Obama Administration is using to justify his latest war. If he is able to start a war with ISIS based on the AUMF, despite the fact that ISIS and al-Qaeda are not allies at all, he or a future President could similarly use the AUMF and the NDAA to imprison anyone, anywhere for an indefinite amount of time based on the same absurd non-claim.
Let this all sink in for a second. Do you still support these ISIS strikes?

US threatened Foley family over Islamic State ransom, slain journalist’s mother says
“We were told that several times and we took it as a threat and it was appalling”

The family of US journalist James Foley – who was kidnapped and killed by the Islamic State – had been “threatened” by the US government with charges of aiding terrorists if they tried to raise funds to pay ransom for him, Foley’s mother told the media.
Obama administration officials repeatedly warned the family of murdered journalist James Foley that they might face criminal charges for supporting terrorism if they paid a ransom to the Islamic State jihadists who were holding and, ultimately, beheaded their son, his mother and brother said this week.
“We were told that several times and we took it as a threat and it was appalling,” Foley’s mother Diane said in an interview with ABC News.
“I think our efforts to get Jim freed were an annoyance,” she elaborated in another interview with CNN. “It didn’t seem to be in [US] strategic interest, if you will.”
The 40-year-old journalist was kidnapped by Islamic State (IS) radicals in November 2012 while reporting from Syria. He was ceremonially beheaded, apparently over US military involvement in Iraq, and a video of his murder was released by the group in August.
In the months leading up to his death, the Foley family was contacted by the jihadists with large ransom demands, which they were unable to meet.
Officials told Foley family members “not go to the media,” and that the “government would not exchange prisoners,” according to Diane Foley. Diane and her husband John were also concerned that any donors to their ransom collection drive might be thrown in prison for funding terrorism.
“Jim was killed in the most horrific way. He was sacrificed because of just a lack of coordination, lack of communication, lack of prioritization,” Diane Foley said. “As a family, we had to find our way through this on our own.”
“It was very upsetting because we were essentially told to trust… that the way they were handling things would bring our son home,” she added.
Several US officials familiar with Foley case confirmed the alleged threats were made. “It was an utterly idiotic thing to do that came across as if [the US official] had the compassion of an anvil,” one official told ABC.
However, State Department spokesperson Marie Hart somewhat denied the allegations, saying, “This department would never and did not ever intend nor do we think we ever did anything that we would consider threatening.” Hostage families are usually only helped to “understand what [US] laws are about terrorists or paying ransom to terrorists,” she added.
On September 2, the IS murdered another journalist, American Israeli Steven Sotloff. The 31-year-old Floridian was captured in August 2013 while reporting from Aleppo, Syria.
Commenting on the government’s unsuccessful efforts to rescue James Foley and Steven Sotloff, the State Department spokesperson added that “this government undertook every single opportunity to find and bring home these American citizens that are being held by ISIS.”
The Foley family launched the James W. Foley Legacy Fund this week, which in large part is intended to help other hostages’ loved ones navigate the frustrating currents they encountered both with the terrorists and with their own government. Two American and several British hostages still remain in ISIS captivity.
“I fear for the remaining American hostages’ families, who have been [intimidated] in a similar way,” she told ABC News. “It definitely interfered with our efforts to bring Jim home.”
Asked whether she had believed ISIS would accept a ransom payment and free their son, as they had many European hostages liberated for between $2-3 million each, Diane Foley replied, “I do, maybe – I mean, who knows?”
