Ferguson Police Tell Reporters To Turn Off Cameras Before Attacking Press
August 14, 2014 by Adan Salazar
Reporters documenting the protests in Ferguson, Mo., were told by police late Wednesday evening to cease recording, just moments before police launched an attack on demonstrators using LRAD sound cannons, flash bang grenades, tear gas canisters and a hail of rubber bullets.
“You are no longer peacefully assembling,” a member of the police announced via loudspeaker to a crowd assembled in front of the burnt down QuikTrip convenience store. “You must leave. Return to your vehicles. Return to your homes. You will be subject to arrest if you fail to comply… Leave to your homes immediately.”
Audio can be heard at approximately 0:37 in the video.
“Please turn off your video,” a female voice can be heard stating shortly thereafter.
As protests against the police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown headed into their fourth straight day, numerous media outlets were out in full force capturing the police state crackdown in real time. Infowars reporters were also on the scene, anticipating the inevitable.
Like clockwork, the loud, incessant chirp of police LRAD sonic weapons wailed disrupting the protests, and police began advancing on demonstrators, preceded by a cloud of tear gas and flash bang stun grenades.
Currently police can only request that journalists cease filming, but imagine what future protests will look like once police obtain proximity disabling camera and phone “kill switch” devices.
“It is not difficult to envisage a scenario where authorities could hijack the technology to shut down communications in a sensitive area in order to limit photo and streaming video coverage, such as at a demonstration or at the scene of unfolding police brutality,” writes Steve Watson, regarding California’s proposed SB 962 “kill switch” bill, which would mandate all phones be equipped with the ability to “render the essential features of the smartphone inoperable when not in the possession of the authorized user.”
“The idea of companies, government officials and police having access to a ‘kill switch’ with no opt out process takes power away from the individual and leaves the door ajar for so called authorities to exploit such technology to target anything they perceive as dissent.”
Indeed, journalists covering the protests last night were directly in police crosshairs, as police tore down news crews’ camera equipment, chased them through various neighborhoods and actively sought them out as they worked in nearby restaurants.
“They are shutting down the entire road and there’s word that they are looking specifically for journalists to arrest them,” Infowars reporter Joe Biggs revealed during last night’s coverage. “Why? Because they don’t want the truth about what’s going on to come out.”
The scenes that unfolded in Ferguson last night made it clear that, to police, reporters and journalists reporting on the cops’ Constitution-infringing, control freak tactics is akin to garlic, holy water or sunlight to vampires.

Ferguson’s Police Chief Freaked Out After Finding Out His Cops Arrested Two Reporters
Aug. 13, 2014 by Hunter Walker
Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
The police chief of Ferguson, Missouri, had a stunned response after he learned his officers had arrested two reporters who were covering the ongoing protests that began in the city after an unarmed African-American teenager was shot by police there Saturday.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Chief Thomas Jackson was shocked when he found out The Washington Post’s Wesley Lowery and The Huffington Post’s Ryan Reilly were arrested Wednesday evening.
“Oh God,” Jackson said after learning of the arrests.
The Times reported that Jackson said he immediately called the St. Louis County Police Department, which was leading the command, after learning the reporters were in custody.
The police have said the teenager who was killed, Michael Brown, attempted to attack an officer and take his gun. Protesters have accused law enforcement in Ferguson of engaging in racial profiling. Officers have responded to the protests with rubber bullets and tear gas.
Both Reilly and Lowery said they were taken into custody and released soon after SWAT teams came into a McDonald’s where they were working Wednesday.
Lowery did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Reilly, who said he was held with Lowery, told Business Insider he did not hear from Jackson after his arrest.
“We asked to speak with him when we left,” Reilly said of Jackson. “I think he was probably closer to the protests.”
Reilly said the police released him and Lowery after asking if they were members of the press.
“When we were in our cell, an officer came through and asked if we were journalists. We were both in the same cell and said we were journalists,” Reilly said. “We were then taken out, given our bags, and sent on our way without any answers.”
Reilly said he and Lowery were given a police report number.
“They said it would probably be a couple weeks before we got the report,” he said.
Reilly added that he did not travel to Missouri “intending to be the story.”
“There are people who have probably been treated much worse,” Reilly said. “We have the privilege that we’re journalists and we’ve been given a get-out-of-jail-free card because of the sort of coverage that would result if we were kept in jail.”

Are Federal Funds Fueling the Riots in Ferguson?
Aug 14, 2014 by Conn Carroll
If you’ve been following the rioting in Ferguson, Missouri, at all, you’ve already seen this truck multiple times:
It is a Lenco BearCat which is actually just an acronym for Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck. They retail for anywhere between $200,000 to $300,000.
So how did the St. Louis County Police Department (which is helping the much smaller Ferguson Police Department) get their hands on such an expensive piece of equipment?
If you guessed the federal government was involved, you are correct.
There are two possible ways the federal government could have helped the St. Louis County Police Department get the BearCat.
First, as suggested by David Mastio of USA Today, St. Louis County could have gotten the vehicle through the Department of Defense’s 1033 program:
Since the creation of the 1033 program by Congress in the early 1990s, the program has distributed $4.3 billion of excess equipment, ranging from innocuous office supplies to bomb-disposing robots and other advanced technology. The flood of military supplies — along with the continuing drug war and grant programs from other federal agencies that provide military-style equipment — has pushed the culture of police forces far from its law-enforcement roots.
A second possibility is the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Grant Program, which has been helping local law enforcement agencies like the St. Louis County Police Department acquire big ticket tactical vehicles like the BearCat for years.
Above is a picture of current St. Louis County Police Department Chief Jon Belmar (who was commanding officer for the department’s division of special operations before he became chief) standing in front of a BearCat with the St. Louis County Police Department logo. The accompanying Patch.com story reports:
A grant from the Department of Homeland Security has allowed the St. Louis County Police Department to equip its Tactical Operations Unit with a new specialized equipment truck and an armored vehicle.
The two vehicles will help the unit’s SWAT team respond more effectively and efficiently to various kinds of threats, from “active shooters” to a biological terrorist attack. Bureau of Patrol Support Commander Capt. John(sic) Belmar said the $240,000 equipment truck and $360,000 armored vehicle were paid for entirely by the grant, but the money was not easy to come by.
“We were pretty stoked about it,” he said. “It is a lot of hard work to not only apply for [the grant] but to be in the position to accept it.”
A Government-Fleet.com story from the same time corroborates the Patch story:
The St. Louis County Police Department has acquired a new armored vehicle, a tactical vehicle, and a helicopter for use during major disasters, criminal incidents, and possible acts of terrorism. The department acquired a LENCO BearCat, a Tactical Support Vehicle, and an MD500E Model Jet Turbine Helicopter.
The BearCat features an elevated, protected platform that can place police officers onto the second story of a building or onto the outer door of a plane. It also comes equipped with chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) detection sensors.
The Tactical Support Vehicle, which was funded via the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI), is designed to hold tactical equipment. It also comes with a computer and communications equipment that enable it to act as a command post.
The UASI program is just one of many ineffective federal safety grant programs that U.S. taxpayers are wasting billions on every year.
House Republicans have repeatedly try to cut both the Department of Justice’s ineffective COPS program and the equally ineffective Department of Homeland Security fire grant programs.
But Democrats have successfully defeated these spending cuts every time, demonizing Republicans for wanting to cut “vital” security spending.
If Americans want to begin right-sizing both federal spending and their local police forces, cutting federal grants to local governments would be a perfect place to start.

Holder dispatches team that ‘inflamed’ Trayvon case
Justice Department intervening in racially charged Ferguson shooting
Protesters in Ferguson, Missouri
August 14, 2014 by Jerome R. Corsi
NEW YORK – Responding to news that the Justice Department has dispatched its Community Relations Service to the scene of racially charged unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, the head of the Washington watchdog group Judicial Watch says it’s time for a civil rights investigation of Attorney General Eric Holder’s agency.
“Eric Holder’s Justice Department is unfortunately not to be trusted on racial matters,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton in an interview with WND.
Under Holder’s leadership, he said, the department “has a record of racially inflammatory rhetoric that is extreme in ideology and cynical in its politics.”
“The idea that this Justice Department could be trusted to mediate is highly suspect,” he said.
Fitton points out the Community Relations Service intervened in the Trayvon Martin case in Florida, helping organize protests that pressed for the prosecution of George Zimmerman, who later was acquitted by a jury of murder.
Holder said in a statement Monday that the fatal shooting Saturday night of an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb, which has led to rioting and looting, deserves a full review. The FBI, the Associated Press reported, is looking into possible civil rights violations.
The St. Louis County Police Department said 18-year old Michael Brown was in a struggle over a police officer’s gun when he was shot. But his family and supporters reject the official version and want the officer who fired the lethal shots to be prosecuted.
The DOJ says its Community Relations Service, created under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, tries to help communities resolve conflicts and tensions arising from racial differences.
But Fitton said Judicial Watch has accumulated considerable evidence that Holder’s DOJ “does not operate in a race-neutral manner.”
His group is “carefully watching and keeping abreast” of the situation in Ferguson and wants information about the Community Relations Service’s work there.
“How much money is being spent? How many employees are being used? What are their talking points?” Fitton asked.
The DOJ Community Relations Service did not return WND phone calls requesting comment.
Jackson-Sharpton model
Fitton said he was concerned Holder sent the CRS to “promote an agenda that follows the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton model, as opposed to pursuing a disinterested, public interest model that people have a right to expect from the Department of Justice.”
As evidence of his concern, he pointed to a meeting Holder attended in the White House in July 2013. At the gathering, Holder and President Obama discussed with Sharpton and a number of civil rights leaders how to combat state laws that require voter identification, charging they discriminate against minorities.
The meeting occurred after the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which said the nation’s racial progress warranted devising a new formula to determine which states must receive clearance from the Justice Department or a federal court in Washington before even minor changes are made to election procedures.
Fitton is concerned that the DOJ already has passed judgment on the policeman who shot the black teen in Ferguson.
“The Holder Justice Department assumes there was a racial element involved in the shooting of Michael Brown, such that the event can only be viewed through the prism of assuming racial misconduct by the police,” he said.
Fitton points to CRS influence on the Trayvon Martin case as reason for concern. Through a Freedom of Information Request and a Florida Sunshine Law request, Judicial Watch found the CRS had been deployed to Sanford, Florida, to help organize and manage rallies and protests against Zimmerman.
Fitton said the documents obtained in the Martin case detailed “the extraordinary intervention by the Justice Department in the pressure campaign leading to the prosecution of George Zimmerman.”
Fitton contends that in the Martin case, the CRS “acted in a manner so as to inflame racial tension, rather than minimize it.”
“I would characterize that activity as taking sides in a matter that was in essential dispute at the time,” Fitton said.
