The world of eye health can get really complicated, really fast. There are so many natural treatments available that it’s hard to keep track of the ones that work and the ones that don’t. Besides, who has the time or patience to try all of them out to figure out which ones work and which ones don’t?

It’s a good thing you have us, because we have four of our favorite home remedies to help treat various vision conditions. However effective these remedies are though, they still are only means to reduce discomfort posed by certain vision conditions. We always encourage a doctor’s advice and consult.

Chamomile and Milk for Irritated and Red Eyes

Irritated and red eyes can be some of the most painful symptoms. The worst thing about irritated eyes is that without immediate relief you’ll be rubbing your eyes all day. And consequently, you’ll make the irritation and redness much, much worse.

Many people turn to eye drops for relief, but the effects wear off quickly. Before you know it, you’re putting drops in your eyes every 20 minutes. You also risk your eyes becoming dependent on these drops.

Not to mention, eye drops don’t take care of eyelid irritation and redness. Chamomile and milk are two great natural options to get some immediate and long lasting relief. These are some definite home remedy staples that you need.

In addition to being a relaxing tea, chamomile makes a great cold compress. It’s much more soothing than a regular cold compress. The herbs from the chamomile will sooth any irritation on the skin around the eyes and will get rid of redness on the eye. Chamomile will also reduce puffiness.

Making a chamomile compress is easy as pie. All you need to do is soak it in lukewarm water. Lukewarm might not seem cold, but it will feel cold on the thin skin of your eyelids. Place the chamomile tea bags over your eyes and sit back and relax.

If you don’t have any chamomile on hand when irritation strikes, milk is the next best thing. Milk is the best natural ingredient to sooth skin irritations. It’s often used as a natural remedy for sun burnt skin.

Take a cotton ball soaked with milk and dab it lightly on the red and irritated area around the eye. Leave the milk until it dries, then wash it off with cool water.

Fish Oils for Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are probably the most common vision condition because so many factors can cause them; a change of season, digital eye strain, pollution, aging, hormonal changes, and the list goes on. Dry eyes can affect almost everyone at any age.

Again, eye drops are always the first thing people reach for when they have dry eyes. While these will provide temporary relief, the results won’t last.

What will last is the results you’ll get from fish oils. Fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids help with tear production in the eyes. That’s why fish oil supplements are my go-to treatments for dry eyes.

One capsule supplement a day is enough to help lubricate your eyes and to regulate moisture. Fish oils will keep your eyes moist which will reduce your risk of irritation and itchy eyes.

Taking a daily fish oil supplement is highly recommended for those who work on computers all day. Digital eye strain affects more and more people every year and put people at serious risk of developing dry eyes.

Another effective way to aid the tear production in the eyes is to blind excessively. It may feel strange at first, but blinking quickly for short periods of time throughout the day will prevent dry eyes by keeping them moist.

Vitamin C Supplements for Cataracts

For the time being there is no non-surgical cure for cataracts. The best you can do if you have cataracts is to treat them and slow down the formation of them on the lens. However there is a natural remedy that will slow down the process and help prevent them.

Cataracts form on the lens of the eye when old cells begin to build up. If not treated and monitored regularly, cataracts can lead to loss of vision and eventual blindness. But vitamin C can help you avoid these severe consequences.

Vitamin C has many advantages. You can find a full length article about all the benefits of vitamin C on our blog. One thing a vitamin C supplement can do for your eye health is to prevent cataracts, a disease that affects a high number of elderly people.

Vitamin C supplements can be taken as a preventative measure or as a way to slow down the progress of cataracts in people who already have them. You can also get your daily vitamin intake from your favorite foods like citrus fruit, orange juice and brightly colored fruit and vegetables.

Frankincense Oil for Glaucoma and AMD

Glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are two very difficult diseases to deal with. No cure exists for them, but once again numerous treatments are available for those who suffer from them.

Glaucoma is a result of too much pressure in the eye. When the intraocular pressure becomes too much, it begins to press down on optic nerves, skewing the images sent from the eye to the brain. This continues to affect the peripheral vision and eventually works its way towards the central vision. Untreated cases can lead to blindness.

AMD is a disease that affects the macula in the eye. Like its name, as we age our macula begins to degenerate. This degeneration will cause the eye’s visual acuity to diminish. This part of the eye is what allows us to perceive fine details like recognizing faces, reading, sewing and watching television.

Frankincense oil has long been thought to enhance eyesight in general. Recently, glaucoma and AMD patients have claimed that this oil has helped them to see much better. Frankincense oil improves circulation around the eyes and supports sensitive nerve tissues.

For best results, add three drops of frankincense oil to your cheeks and the temples. Do not put the oil directly into the eyes.

Natural remedies don’t have to be complicated. Our natural remedies are simple to use and won’t break the bank. Our best advice to you would be to try them out and see which ones work for you!
