President Trump Did Not Really Raise Mortgage Rates

Many outlets over the weekend reported that President Donald Trump, in one of his first acts as President, raised mortgage rates for first-time home buyers. That isn’t exactly true. The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Friday night that a planned reduction of mortgage insurance premiums was being suspended indefinitely. The quarter-of-a-percentage point cut would have saved borrowers and estimated $500 per year, according to reports.

The proposed cut was announced by the outgoing HUD Director Julian Castro just weeks before. Many Republicans had opposed the cut, saying it put taxpayers at a greater risk. The Federal Housing Administration received a bailout of $1.7 billion back in 2013.
