We’ve previously reported that NOAA is sending $20.8 million in fisheries aid to Alaska. The money will be divided between the Yukon-Kuskokwin and the Cook Inlet for 2012 fisheries failures.

To make sure the money is used effectively, NOAA is asking for public comments. Julie Speegle with NOAA…

Speegle: “So what we’re looking for is comments on how these disaster funds can be used and comments or suggestions, recommendations would need to meet the criteria for using those funds. And we also want to identify representative organizations that will serve as a voice for the affected region in developing a spending plan for the disaster funds.”

There criteria for disaster funds include…

The proposed activity would likely contribute to the restoration of the fishery and/or prevent a future failure and assist the affected fishing communities.

The proposed activity would not likely expand the size or scope of the commercial fishery failure in that fishery or into other fisheries or other geographic regions.

NOAA will work with state agencies in developing their plan, including:

Kenai Peninsula Borough

Matanuska-Susitna Borough

Northern District Setnetters Association

Kenai Peninsula Fishermen’s Association

Kenai River Sportfishing Association

Kenai River Professional Guide Association
