A Ham Worth Learning about: Helen Coutier Schmock W8GJX

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 06:50 AM PST
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...utier_schmock/

Back when I was in Middle school, I had the opportunity to know a fantastic

lady. Her name was Helen Schmock. This post is a bit long, but its worth

the read if youre the sort interested in people who did some cool things

with their life, the least of which happened to be ham radio.

Before she died in 2002, she was the oldest female ham radio operator in

the world. Having died at 92, she was licensed for 73 years. She was the

worlds fastest female CW keyer of any age, and was still keying 80wpm at 80

years old. I woke up most mornings with my father a couple hours before

school started so we could go to the gym. On the 30 minute car ride there,

we would be part of our local repeaters morning net. Net controller was

Helen. It was the highly of my day, and she was a major influence in my

pursuit of a career in communications.

Below is the transcript of her obituary, from when she died in 2002. She

was an extremely kind and wonderful person, and even in her age was smart

as a fox. Whenever I listen to Diane Rheme on NPR, I think of Helens voice.

Anyway, I hope you take a moment to read through and maybe pick up her

autobiography called "I never shot a rabbit". It details her life from how

she grew up in a log cabin to how she was a code keyer back in WW2 and

earned the respect of presidents and military command for her speed and

reliability in getting messages where they were needed.

Heres her Obit.. It does a nice job of summarizing a few high points, but

still misses a lot.

Helen Cloutier Schmock, 93, of Manistee and formerly of Ludington, died

Saturday, Sept. 21 2002 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.

She was born March 17, 1909 in Manistique, the daughter of Henry and Carrie

(Little) Hargreaves. She married John Cloutier in 1931. In 1962, Helen

married John Schmock who preceded her in death in 1983. Helen was an

author, artist, publisher, beautician, musician, librarian, dance

instructor and a ham radio operator. She received a bachelor of arts degree

from Los Angeles University and bachelor and master of arts degrees from

Central Michigan University. She also studied under several famous artists.

Helen began her extensive career by playing the piano during silent movies

at her father’s theater, The Gero Theatre, in Manistique. While living in

Escanaba, she owned and operated Helen’s School of Dancing and later

Helen’s Beauty Shoppe.

She was a feature writer and staff reporter for the Escanaba Daily Press.

She worked at radio station WESK in Escanaba as the Women’s Continuity

director, program director and public relations director.

Later, she was assistant to the administrative head of Michigan State

Library in Escanaba. She served as director of the Menominee County Library

in Stephenson and, after a move to Chicago, she was the director of the

technical library at Motorola Inc. in Chicago.

After moving to the Ludington area, she was co-owner, editor and

circulation manager at J & H Publishing Company in Ludington. She served in

the capacity of systems librarian and art instructor in the Scottville

Community Schools and later in the Baldwin Community Schools.

As an artist, her work was exhibited at the Upper Peninsula State Fair in

Escanaba, Chicago Motorola in Chicago, Possessions Art Gallery in Chicago,

the Carnegie Exhibition in Ludington, the Scottville State Bank in

Scottville and the City Mart Expo in Boston.

Helen was the published author of 17 books including: in 1952 “Sim

Barton-Girl Radio Operator; in 1957, “Isle Royale Calling which was

endorsed by Gov. G. Mennon Williams; in 1960, “The Many Names of Lee Lue;

from 1960-63 she wrote four paperback books; in 1963, she authored the

children’s series of nine books titled “The Adventures of Mournful Mouse;

and in 1991, she wrote her autobiography “I Never Shot a Rabbit. She was a

member of the Woman’s Literary Club.

One of her many interests was ham radio. She was licensed in 1929 as W8GJX.

At the time of her death, she was believed to be the longest licensed woman

ham radio operator in the world — 73 years. She was the first woman member

of the Quarter Century Wireless Association (Worldwide), a membership she

held until her death. She was also a member of the Sunrise Radio Net and

the West Michigan Repeater Association. In 1973, she was listed in “The

World Who’s Who of Women. submitted by agtwork

K9 Mobile

I want to get into K9 mobile, its where you strap all your gear to your dog

and operate mobile with a wireless headset. I am curious as to what the

best dog/radio combo would be? I am thinking that SLAs would be too heavy

for my dachshund so I might upgrade to a bigger dog. I am thinking

something with a huge tail so I can tie a sloper onto it like they do on

sailboats. Would I have to get him his own call sign or can I just add a

/DM to the end of my call? Has anyone tried this? submitted by Echelon81

wire tuner vs coax tuner for mobile vertical

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 06:40 AM PST
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...bile_vertical/

Is there much difference internally between a coax tuner and a wire tuner?

The Icom AT-180 vs the AH-4. Would the AH-4 have some sort of balun built

in, that the AT-180 might not have? Does the Coax tuner (AT-180) only work

with a balanced dipole type antenna?

I installed an HF vertical on my mobile with an AT-180 tuner. The coax

between the antenna and the tuner < 8" long. I can tune 6m-17m. I cant tune

20m and lower. One of the guys in my club has an AH-4 with a 104" whip in

his car. He can tune all the way to 40, and a little bit on the high end of

75m. Not much efficiency on 20m-75m, but he can tune it.

He is thinking that I cant tune because I have a coax tuner (AT-180)

instead of a wire tuner. Thoughts? Could I add a balun to make the coax

tuner work? How about some additional impedance matching such as the

MFJ-908? A shunt coil at the antenna base? submitted by rem1473

Just looking for ideas

Posted: 06 Mar 2015 09:25 AM PST
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ing_for_ideas/

I may come into an inheritance (sad face) soon, but if I do, I was thinking

of splurging on a radio.

I like the idea of an all-mode, all-band(ish) radio that can go mobile.

So far, the Kenwood TS-2000 is standing out b/c it can do the remote head &

cross-band repeat.

Any other suggestions?

I currently own an Icom 735 and Yaesu 2800 & vx-5r. I LOVE the ruggedness

of the Yaesus. Those things are tanks!

Otherwise, Im pretty happy with how both brands work as radios. submitted

Can I change the channel crystal of a CB radio to one for a ham frequency ?

If yes, here do I find the crystal?

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 10:21 PM PST
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...a_cb_radio_to/

I just got my hands on a Realistic TRC-85 , its a very basic CB it has 3

channels that requires 1 crystal per channel, could I just find a crystal

for the 10m calling frequency , slap it in there and use it on 10 m? how

about 20m? but most importantly, where do I find those crystals anyway??? I

looked on ebay, and its just random frequencies all over the place
