The National World War 1 Museum will host the Warrensburg Area Amateur

Radio Club Inc, in recognition of the 1914 Christmas Truce.

For further information, please visit https://theworldwar.org/amateurradio

Since this is going to be based out of Kansas City, should be pretty easy

for most of the US to pick up this special event call!

Edit: And yes, Canada too! Sorry, didnt mean to discriminate! submitted

Should I Even Care Anymore?

Posted: 23 Dec 2014 03:26 PM PST
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._care_anymore/

Hey /r/amateurRadio, I got into ham so I could operate analog video over

ISM bands for RC aircraft A.K.A. First Person View. I am not here to

discuss the FAA or any recent rulings about sUAS, but rather FCC licencing

or lack there-of.

I run a RC based meetup group and have been active locally in the FPV

community. In addition to fly-ins I also hold monthly VE testing meets at a

few different locations. Today a guy posted this in my VE test meetup: "So

I was checking out the study flash cards on hamstudy and I do not see the

relevance of knowing such knowledge to safely and legally operate an FPV RC

aircraft. I am operating on 1 of 8 channels of the 5.8GHz frequency (my

transmitter only does 8 channels), yet knowing this information does

nothing for me or the people around me in terms of safety or from a

security aspects. How does knowing this information help anyone in the

hobby? How does knowing "Why is it important to have a low SWR in an

antenna system that uses coaxial cable feed line?" have anything to do with

RC hobbyists? I feel my time would be better spend learning the laws/rules

and regulations for flying in my state." He then RSVPed no to the meet.

Sorry if that statement made your brain hurt.

This is by far the most popular mindset among the community, with even

FPV "Elmers" responding that unlicensed use has never been an issue so why

bother.

All FPV transmitters are not part 15 compliant AFAIK, many guys run on

international bands not legal in the USA. Not to mention all the

new "Aerial Photographers" charging $$$ for Drone photo shoots using non

compliant FPV transmitters.

So are they right? Am I wasting time and effort encouraging FPV hobbyists

to come to VE meetups? Should I stop IDing and switch to the lesser used

international frequencies?

TL;DR Most Radio Controlled First Person View hobbyists use non compliant

video transmitters without ham tickets and dont care. Should I care?
