Amateur/Ham Radio

///////////////////////////////////////////

I am in the process of gutting and removing old AM transmitters from the

radio station I work at. Are any of these parts valuable? There are a lot

of vaccum tubes and large fuses and different bits that seem specialized

and rare.

Starting an HF station

So I just upgraded to general the other day and Im eager to get on HF. I

was wondering if anyone had any tips on what stuff I need to buy and

perhaps what pitfalls to avoid.

Ive found a lightly used TS-2000 for about $950 that I am seriously

considering buying, but Im wondering what other kinds of things you all

think will be necessary.

Thanks! submitted by Enatbyte

CW Key for practice

I am holding off on buying a transceiver currently. Can someone recommend a

good straight key setup that I could use to practice without a radio? I

assume you need some sort of oscillator to hook the key to. Any links?

I used to forget to give my call often enough. Not anymore. When the sand

runs out, I give the call and flip it over. $19 at Amazon.

First CW QSO. Well that was thoroughly horrible.

http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ghly_horrible/

I worked BG6IW in China on 15m CW just now. Or, something in the

neighborhood approaching CW.

I dont think Ive ever choked so hard at anything except maybe trying to

make a speech in front of 100 people. I sent CQ well enough for a little

while but I wasnt really prepared for an actual answer because the band was

quiet, but then, there it came. BG6 something something holy **** Ive just

forgotten all Morse code ever. And he was sending with a straight key

faster than me (I was at 15 wpm on a keyer and still messing up, sending

too many automatic dits, arrggh).

I somehow managed to send an RST and my name but screwed up just about

everything else. I got his sig report and thanks to QRZ.com. I cheated and

got his name, but hell if I could read anything else because my mind froze

up like it was running Windows Millennium Edition.

Finally I just got too nervous and sent 1ST CW QSO, SRY FER BAD CODE and

ended it. Ugh. Not a very good debut.

Its not turned me off to code at all, but something tells me I should have

started with a straight key instead of a paddle. I cant control the damn

thing.

Ugh.

EDIT: and of course I wrote his callsign in this post wrong too submitted

i can use to talk to a friend who lives about 5 km from my place in a city.

Will the kenwood tk-240 do the trick? (http://i.imgur.com/5zFz361.jpg)

These electrics are dormant. Will this pole be an appropriate place for an

inverted v dipole? If I power this light somewhere down the road is that

unsafe? Will it effect transmissions?

Cw with a tech license?

Posted: 19 Sep 2014 07:39 PM PDT
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._tech_license/

Im going to take my tech license exam on Sunday, and Im curious as to how

usable (or In other words how much traffic in) Cw is on the tech freqs. Ive

been told a lot that general is the way to go with Cw (or atleast that its

used more on their freqs.) is this true? Im curious about it as

transmitters for Cw seem a lot easier to make than those for phone, and it

looks like building them would be the best route to keep costs down.

How do you use APRS/AX.25!

Posted: 19 Sep 2014 05:58 PM PDT

(edit): Hah. The title is supposed to have a question mark, not an

exclamation point. :(

To the best of my knowledge, APRS/AX.25s predominant usage is tracking

objects. A few years ago I got the opportunity to do a weather balloon at

college, and we managed to track the balloon with APRS on VHF. Lots of fun.

That being said, looking through the protocol documentation, it looks like

theres a METRIC TON of neat things. Mailboxes, IP over APRS... Im just

wondering if anyone else is using them. submitted by bjt2n3904

My not-so-great experience with Baofeng BF-F8HP (8W)

Posted: 19 Sep 2014 09:00 PM PDT
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...eng_bff8hp_8w/

Its been about 2 weeks since I first got my license. I started out with the

BF-F8HP connected to a Diamond X-50A antenna mounted in my attic. I got the

BF-F8HP thinking that the 8W output would help me get into repeaters that

are farther away. However, this was not the case. I was having pretty good

luck with UHF repeaters but was having tons of trouble with closer VHF

ones. I started thinking that UHF just works better than VHF because of all

the buildings in this area (Silicon Valley).

Today, I received the Baofeng (Pofung) UV-B5, which is only a 5W radio.

This made a world a difference! Im now able to get into the VHF repeaters

loud & clear that I previously couldnt get into at all.

No idea why this is... just relaying my experience in case it helps

anyone. submitted by completefudd
