Ham Radio in Valparai Likely in a Month's Time:

COIMBATORE: The recent rain damage inflicted on Valparai has led to the

decision of installing a ham radio station in the town in the coming

months. The radio station will link the local taluk office to the amateur

radio operators across the world along with district collectorate in

Coimbatore and sub collector office in Pollachi. Amateur Radio Club in

Pollachi has promised to establish the station free of cost and a

permission has been sought from the government by Pollachi sub-collector,

RanjanaSiddarthJagade. Once established, it would facilitate emergency

communication during the time of calamities and disasters. "The Uttarakhand

disaster has prompted us to approach the authorities with such a proposal.

An experimental station was set up at the taluk office on last Saturday and

its functioning was explained to a set of revenue, fore force and forest

officials. Based on their positive feedback, we have sought permission from

the government through the sub-collector. The permission is expected to be

granted soon and the radio station will be a reality in another month,''

said K Ibrahim, coordinator of Amateur Radio Club.

EUROPE -- Messe Friedrichshafen has reported its international amateur

radio exhibition attracted more than 15,300 visitors, up from 14,800 in

2012. The 38th Ham Radio was held on 28-30 June at Lake Constance, Messe

Friedrichshafen. The organiser said more than 200 exhibitors showcased

their antennas, radios, and technical innovations. "The Ham Radio gives an

excellent overview of the industry and provides representation for almost

all the subtleties of amateur radio," said Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus

Wellmann. "We were again successful in doing justice to the leading

position of Ham Radio as Europe's premier amateur radio show." The German

Amateur Radio Club (DARC) presented a supporting programme at the event, as

the non-commercial sponsor at the 64th DARC Lake Constance

conference. "More than 100 DARC volunteers took part; there were also 70

active participants who made the programme of presentations a great

success," said DARC executive director Jens Hergert. The focus of Ham Radio

Carnegie's Smallest 'Ham' Can Hang with Seasoned Vets:

He is the smallest 'ham' in town. At 11 years old, Gabriel Finch is the

youngest member of the Steel City Amateur Radio Club, an organization of

amateur radio operators that has its clubhouse in Collier Township. Also

known as "hams" they gathered last weekend for the club's annual Field Day

events. Despite his age, Finch, of Carnegie, tackled the radio like a

professional, speaking in jargon that would confuse the novice onlooker.

But his talents for radio broadcasting didn't come overnight. A student at

Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, he had to take a test to obtain a

license from the Federal Communication Commission. "I took a ham class for

eight weeks then I took my technician exam," Finch said. "Weeks later, I

got my license." Finch attributes his interest to his grandfather, Don

Smith, who sparked his curiosity in the hobby. He said the unlimited

possibilities keep him in the game. "I do it to talk to people around the

world," Finch said.

Sun Unleashes Solar Fireworks Preview for July Fourth:

http://www.eham.net/articles/30407

The sun unleashed an M1.5-class solar flare (lower left) on July 3, 2013, a

solar fireworks to the traditional Fourth of July holiday in the United

States. The solar flare erupted at about 3 a.m. EDT (0700 GMT) and was

spotted by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which snapped a photo of the

July solar storm. "Just a few minutes after 7:00 UT, the sun produced an

M1.5-class solar flare. Perhaps an early Fourth of July fireworks?" SDO

mission officials wrote in a Facebook post announcing the flare. M-class

solar flares are medium-strength solar storms that can supercharge Earth's

northern lights displays when they are aimed at Earth. NASA officials

reported that the July 3 solar flare erupted from a point just over the

eastern side, or limb, of the sun, so it was not directed at our planet.

The most powerful type of solar flares are X-class sun storms. When aimed

directly at Earth, X-class flares can pose a threat to astronauts in space,

interfere with satellite signals and potentially affect electrical power

grids on Earth.
