DAYTONA BEACH, FL (June 24, 2013) – A big weekend of ASA Member Track action was highlighted by a record fourth Dirt Cup title for Jonathan Allard at Skagit Speedway and a chase for a $15,000 bonus under the control State Park Speedway’s Mark Mackesy after his Thursday night victory at the track’s Ropa’s Pizza Flip Merwin Memorial.
The 42nd Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup, a three-day $20,000 to win event, was forced to two days after the opening night was rained out.
Allard, of Chico, CA, started his march to another title Friday night qualifying second quickest and finished fourth in the “A” Main after earning the race’s hard charger award gaining 10 spots.
Saturday’s matinee racing program saw Allard set fast time and finish sixth in the 30-lap feature and once again earned the hard charger award after gaining nine positions.
Allard started the evening program winning the “A” Scramble and giving him the pole for the $20,000 to win feature which he led all 40 laps holding off Murphy, Abreu, Travis Rilat and Kyle Hirst.
He joined Jason Meyers, Rico Abreu, Peter Murphy and Shane Stewart as the top five in points after the first night of racing.
Mark Mackesy held off two late restarts to win the Flip Merwin Memorial for the second time in three years Thursday night at State Park Speedway, an ASA Member Track, allowing the veteran driver to have the advantage in the inaugural Auto Select Triple XX Challenge.
Mackesy secured the 10th Anniversary Flip Merwin Memorial and joined Chris Weinkauf as the only multiple-winners of the race.
The win over a veteran lot of Wisconsin’s leading Late Model drivers allows Mackesy to have the opportunity to take home the $15,000 offer to any driver that can win the Ropa’s Pizza Flip Merwin Memorial, the Newsline Nine Detjens Memorial 125 and the Lodi Memorial.
The Auto Select XXX Challenge marks the first time State Park Speedway has put together an event of this magnitude as it draws some of the biggest names in Wisconsin short track racing.
In additional to a possible $16,000 pay day for one driver, three drivers will each take home extra cash in an elimination style challenge. Each of the three events will start 24 cars. The top 12 finishers in Thursday’s race are now eligible to continue the challenge and receive bonus money.
Following the second event, the Newsline Nine Detjens Memorial 125, the top six finishers of those 12 will continue to be eligible going into the final event, the Lodi Memorial Race. At the conclusion of the Lodi Memorial race the top three finishers of those six will receive bonus money of $1,000, $750 and $500 respectively.
The ASA Pro Trucks head to Atomic Motor Raceway, the 1/3-mile dirt oval, in Atomic City, ID for the series debut on a dirt track in a race billed as “Blowing up the Dirt.”
The fifth of 12 races on the 2013 ASA Pro Trucks schedule opened with a Friday practice and the driver that benefited the most was Johnny “Be Good” Newhouse, who took what he learned from the practice and applied to his race day setup taking the win in his heat race and main event.
“The practice yesterday was huge for us,” said Newhouse. “The truck was really starting to go away and Kendal (Woll) was all over me, I made it as wide as I could. This dirt racing is a blast.”
Woll slid his way to a second place finish in the main event after battling with two Newhouse’s in the final six laps only to fall short by less than a truck length. While trying to make a move on Newhouse Woll felt pressure from the race winner’s daughter, Hannah Newhouse, with a couple of bump and run moves during the last three laps that had fans on their feet cheering as the three drivers swapped paint all the way around the track.
