Glad to know I am not alone in collecting apps for kids!
Earlier we featured some of our favorite Free Apps for kids and the best Educational Apps for Kids. I also asked on our Facebook page (have you liked us?) and in an online group of moms to tell me about the apps that their kids *love* to play. Many of these are new to me, and others are favorites.

Best Kids Apps
Does your gal love to play dress-up?
This is the perfect app for her. According to one grandma, this app for girls is a favorite with the 6-10 year old range!
Do your kids like coloring?
Crayola has a coloring kids app where you can take a picture of your child and other family members and put them into the “picture” for your child to color. Fun!
Kids Apps. I detest stickers in the house, they get on furniture, washed onto clothes, leave gummy residue on windows… if your kids love stickers, Clicky Sticky is a house-friendly way for them to play with them – on your ipad!
Toca Boca has a collection of fun apps for kids – they all have colorful graphics, are very intuitive and easy for young children and encourage creativity. MANY reviewers mentioned different games that they offered. Two of them are pictured above: Toca Tea Party and Toca Robot.
Thanks to this great app for toddlers and adults, I can have my face completely scribbled with a purple marker and not mind. Scribble Press allows you or your child to color to your hearts content. It is also great for taking notes – more than one grocery list has been jotted down in scribbles, and you can create ebooks of your child’s collections. This is one of the best free apps out there.
Like the earlier app, this one puts your child’s face into a story that is read to them – it is a favorite app of my preschoolers! They love being “in” the stories.
Awhile ago, we had an app of a cat that would talk… there is a new version out – meet Talking Gina the Giraffe. This best kids app is sure to make your kids giggle. Another favorite by reviewers was Talking Ben, he’s grouchy and fun to talk to.
Sometimes the simple apps bring the biggest smiles. My one year olds love banging on the piano with this musical app, Virtuoso. P.S. This app is free!
Puzzle Apps
In this puzzle game for kids, you have to use water in it’s various states (liquid, solid and gas) to solve a variety of problems. Where’s my Perry, has thumbs up for it’s value – only 99 cents!!
The butterflies are trapped in jars!!! Your mission is to rescue them with the help of Spikey’s Bounce. This is a top kids app! Great for the 6-12 year old range!
This is a game that I originally got for myself and was bored with it… but my 3 & 5 year olds LOVE figuring out ways to make the water flow through the pipes. It is a great kids app.
Magic Forest is a fun whimsical app where you need to solve puzzles to help bring your pet home. It has 80 levels and reaches a wide range of skills/abilities.
Angry birds game. Yup, from our previous posts where one of the Quirky Moms re-enacted angry birds with bricks and toys, and from the angry birds birthday party we had, you know we LOVE angry birds. My one year old likes throwing the birds (anywhere) and my hubby enjoys winning levels. This is a multi-aged game.
For another multi-age game, check out Minecraft. My son enjoys building various houses and digging holes. My Daughter enjoys writing her name with buildings, while my hubby plays a more complicated version.
Do your kids like looking for “mysteries” in photos? I remember looking for the “odd” things in a scene when I was a kid in the Highlights Magazine, they now have an app full of picture games for kids.
We love free kids games!! This game is about a subway artist, he collects spare change from the tracks and has a paint-powered pack. Three thumbs up for Subway Surfers.
Temple Run reminds me of Indiana Jones (but it says it is not based on the movie). This is an app full of challenges in an ancient jungle ruin.
Classic Computer Game. Lemmings was one of the first computer games I played as a child and I loved discovering that there is a modern equivalent for kids in the game, Chicks.
Easy Games for Kids
An Art App for Kids, Brushes, lets kids create whatever picture they want – as the reviewer, Doug, said, this game has all the fun of painting with none of the mess. While it is a bit pricey, it is a versatile game, great for a wide range of ages.
Looking for a Time-wasting App? Cut the Rope is a silly game where there is a mission and a puzzle for your kids to solve with little ghosts. This game is played by adults (although it seems a touch juevenile) and also by kids. One reader said that both she and her daughter enjoy this game together.
We have a wii and my kids love “cutting the fruit” with the controls. Now, thanks to the “Fruit Ninja” game for kids we can cut fruit all day long It is a great way to work on fine motor skills.
I originally got this game for me. I like puzzles… and my 6 year old has decided it is her favorite game… and I am not the only mother-child duo who enjoys this game. One of my reviewers mentioned this game as one of her family’s favorites as well. Yay for UnBlock Me. P.S. This is a free kids app - even better!
I have not played this game, but Monster Match is a cute kids game, according to one reviewer, where kids match the various monsters to each other. Great sound effects!
I don’t quite get the point of this app, Chuzzle, you take the Chuzzle and bonk it into other chuzzles and more chuzzles appear??? BUT, my kids LOVE this game. They giggle and talk to it as they try to solve the missions.
