2013-10-07

In 2006, iconic punk venue CBGB closed its doors for good, and while that space is now a store for fashion label John Varvatos, the spirit of the club has stayed alive.  Last year, it came back to NYC in the form of the CBGB Festival that summer, at venues around NYC & a big free show in Times Square.  This year, it moves to October, but both the shows around the city & in Times Square take a big step up.

See our handy map of all of the participating venues:

October 12th

11:00 AM – The Wallflowers

11:00 AM – Divine Fits

4:00 PM – James Murphy (DJ set)

4:00 PM – Grizzly Bear

4:00 PM – My Morning Jacket

Lisa Loeb plays twice at CBGB Festival, at both The Living Room (see above) & the big Times Square event.

The Wallflowers formed over two decades ago in Los Angeles around Jakob Dylan, son of yes, that ‘other’ Dylan (Thomas?…).  Jakob came out from his father’s massive shadow with 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse and hits like “8th Avenue Heartache” and “One Headlight” (though JD was outshone by Bruce Springsteen when they did “Headlight” together on the 1997 MTV VMAs…), though haven’t reached that height since.  Jakob Dylan has done his own solo tours (QRO live review), but recently got a new Wallflowers behind him (QRO live review).

The term ‘super-group’ is bandied about way too often these days, but one act actually living up to it is Divine Fits (QRO photos at first official show).  Take Britt Daniel, the main man of Austin’s excellent alt-rock outfit Spoon (QRO live review), add Dan Boeckner, one-half of the writing team behind Canada’s Wolf Parade (QRO live review) and Handsome Furs (QRO live review), plus drummer Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks, and you’ve got A Thing Called Divine Fits (QRO review), who are ready to rock CBGB Festival (QRO photos at a festival).

If you’re gonna go to a DJ set, go to one by LCD Soundsystem’s (QRO live review) James Murphy (QRO photos DJing), who knows his way around a turntable or two (QRO photos DJing).

Things have gotten very big for Grizzly Bear (QRO live review), surprising many who thought the humble, intricate Brooklyn outfit (QRO live review) was too complex for mass appeal (QRO photos headlining a festival).  Yet mass appeal is what the group has gotten off of recent records Shields and Veckatimest, as their sonic beauty transcends (QRO photos). They’ve even played Stephen Colbert’s ‘ColbChella’ (QRO photos at ColbChella ‘012), which is surely a highlight in any act’s career (QRO photos at a festival).

The current alt-country wave has lifted the boats of bands that had already been doing it for a long time, such Wilco (QRO live review) and My Morning Jacket (QRO live review).  The Louisville outfit, fronted by singer/guitarist Jim James, doesn’t have to just play it sweet, but also keep the rock. They reached the bigger time with 2008’s Evil Urges (QRO review) and 2011’s Circuital (QRO review), but are still growing – even had a whole episode of American Dad about/with them (okay, not Family Guy, but still…).  Having already hit the big time, they can definitely handle headlining in Times Square (QRO photos outdoors).

10:00 PM – Bell X1

The second biggest band in Ireland & the second biggest named after a spy plane, Bell X1 (QRO live review) might not be U2, but they’ve grown from their somewhat too pretty early days in records like Flock (QRO review) to the impressively Talking Heads Blue Lights On the Runway (QRO review), following that up with 2011’s Bloodless Coup (QRO review) and this year’s Chop Chop (QRO review).

‘The Brothers Meat’, as Kurt Cobain called Curt & Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets (QRO photos outdoors) in the seminal MTV Unplugged session where they sat in with Nirvana (QRO DVD review), have been through major ups & downs, including break-ups & jail time. But the seminal eighties (QRO live review) punk rock act helped birth the ‘cowpunk’ genre, and have kept it up (QRO photos) with post-reunion records like 2009’s Sewn Together (QRO review), 2011’s Lollipop (QRO review), and this year’s Rat Farm (QRO review).
