Portugal and Brazil won the men’s and women’s titles respectively at the 22nd World University Handball World Championship in Guimaraes, Portugal. From 3-10 August, 11 teams competed in both the men’s and women’s tournaments under the umbrella of the International University Sport Federation (FISU) to succeed the Czech men’s and women’s teams that won the 2012 title in Blumenau, Brazil. This time the Czechs ended up with minor successes, finishing ranked seventh in both the men’s and women’s competitions. The men’s tournament was dominated by host Portugal. After beating Romania 32:25 in the quarter-final and their neighbours from Spain 33:27 in the semi, they also dominated the final against Brazil with a clear 29:23 victory. Brazil reached the final after a 27:23 win over Russia in the other semi-final. The fight for the bronze proved to be a much closer battle. After a 26:26 tie after regulation time, Spain won the penalty shoot-out 29:28 to claim the third podium spot. Mexico After a thrilling 24:23 penalty shoot-out semi-final win over Korea, the Brazilian women completed a notable trio of successes for their national federation after a lopsided 24:17 victory over Russia in the final. Brazilian women’s teams now hold the IHF World title, the Beach Handball World title and the World University title simultaneously. In the bronze medal match, Korea was never seriously threatened en route to a 30:20 win over Romania. Earlier Russia defeated the Romanians 29:26 in the semis.
