Doha 17th December 2013: State of Qatar entered the Guinness World Records for the world’s largest flag.

The “Flag of Gratitude and Loyalty,” measuring 509m in length, 200m in width and has a total size of 1,018sqm beats out the current record set by Romania in 27th May, which has a dimension of 349 metres by 226 metres and used 44 miles of thread to sew it.

The largest flag is currently spread across a large area on the outskirts of Doha. The plan to unveil it at Katara Cultural Village beach was scrapped due to heavy weight and some technical issues.

The Guinness World Records official said: “This is a big challenge and one of the most difficult records I have seen. The record grew many times from 1976 and the current record to break is almost 80,000sqm. It was established in Romania last year with a flag that set the record of 79,000sqm.”

The campaign to make the flag was launched in September with the support of Katara cultural foundation and the Brooq Qatari Magazine. Over 2,000 people have participated in this project, which aimed at highlighting the deep unity and brotherhood among the loyal people and wise leadership. It also seeks to convey the message of loyalty to His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and tribute to His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani for their great efforts and sincere dedication witnessed by the whole world and seen on ground by citizens and residents.
