SEATTLE — Seven people, including a Seattle police officer, were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning Wednesday. The source was believed to be a car left running inside the garage of a condo in Lake City, the Seattle Fire Department said.

Medics transported five people to the Virginia Mason Medical Center’s Hyperbaric Chamber, the fire department said. In addition, medics were evaluating a 79-year-old couple with prolonged exposure to the carbon monoxide at the scene at 13749 35th Ave. NE.

“Source of CO appears to be car left on inside garage,” the fire department tweeted.

The Seattle Times reported that Fire Department spokeswoman Sue Stangl said a resident returned home in the 13700 block of 35th Avenue NE and noticed a strong smell of exhaust. He pinpointed it to one condo, where the front door was open, and he found two elderly men unconscious inside.

A responding police officer and two residents were taken to the hospital after they were overcome while rescuing the two elderly men. The two elderly men were in critical condition, Stangl told the Times.
