Edgar Martinez & Cherie Sibley open at Galleria Dante – Edgar Martinez, born in Toluca, Mexico, came to Vallarta at the age of 6. Although Edgar feels deeply inspired and influenced by the great masters, he has worked diligently to create his own style. Cherie´s focus over the last few years has turned to Water Birds in their natural environment. Her sensitivity to their habits and relationship with the water that supports them is captured profoundly in her paintings. Read more
How We found Puerto Vallarta in a Changing World – Well, my wife and I have landed in Puerto Vallarta and this time, finally, we think it’s for good. I think it will depend a lot upon how much the love of art in this wonderful place will continue to decline and how much Puerto Vallarta becomes a commercial port. The new customs warehouse and the four lane freeway being built between here and Guadalajara give us cause for some concern. Read more
A True Beach House… – The soft diaphanous salt air wafts through the open concept of this simple yet effective architectural design – would that it had gauze draping the sides to illustrate the motion of the ever so soft breeze. Thatch top still green from the recent construction, sturdy crooked legs like that of the broken men who braved the seas and might have found themselves beached here to build this primitive, yet artistic structure. Quirks of Nature – In addition to photographing birds, this year we became intrigued with the large numbers of butterflies and to date have photographed and identified more than fifty species. Their colours and flight patterns are mesmerizing. Hiking “The Easy” Trail from Los Ayala – The dawn of a bright sunny Sunday morning motivated Doreen and I to leave our bungalow and hot coffee early to hike “The Easy” trail located above Los Ayala. This was our second exploratory hike of the season to determine which of the jungle trails were clear and suitable for forthcoming group hikes. With perspiration dripping from our brows, we crested the first hill to pause at the junction where three trails begin, for a water break before proceeding onto “The Easy” pathway. Maintenance on the “Bridge of Life” is Progressing – Phase 1 of the “Bridge of Life” maintenance was completed yesterday (Tuesday, January 21) as planned. Ten volunteers showed up to help and they successfully replaced the cables that run along both the top and bottom of the side fencing, as well as almost all of the vertical cables that attach to the main supporting cable under the wood planks. February 2014 ● Zumba en San Pancho – It was so much fun to go to Zumba in San Pancho after being away for almost a year! Esther’s Zumba class in San Pancho (San Francisco, Nayarit) was where I first became hooked on Zumba. I wrote about discovering Zumba in San Pancho in my first “Zumba Mexico!” blog post. February 2014 ● Two Events at Escuela del Mundo – San Pancho is a place with many opportunities for young children and families – especially opportunities for education and building skills. In our town, you’ll find public schools from kindergarten through middle school, an amazing community center for after school programs but, also for the past 8 years, a small cooperative parent-run school has been a second home to many families. At the end of a dirt road – You never know what you might discover at the end of a dirt road. There is something special about the draw of the unknown, especially if it is a paradise to be discovered. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I first discovered the Mayto beach area. That was a few years ago when the road was a lot more challenging than it is today. Read more
